Oh, okay. I guess I've got to re-work that one part of Tashka's backstory then, seeing as it's sounding like the Dueling Ring would have been less discriminatory than I realized.
EDIT: Due to recent developments, I've taken some time to develop some new profiles. These are presently under review from M31, though I'll post them here for reference. I'm hoping there's some good ideas here.
Gender/Species: Female Miraluka
Appearance: Viseria generally prefers to conceal herself, and almost never removes her distinct green hood even while sleeping. Under the hood, she keeps her eyes hidden under a green band of cloth.
As for her other clothes, Viseria often prefers to dress modestly, unlike some of the other gang members.
Skills: Viseria grew up in the streets of Taris and knows them well. She is also an expert mechanic and swoop rider, something aided in part by her... unique vision and, unknowingly, her connections to the force.
Force Abilities: As a Miraluka, it's no surprise that Viseria is force-sensitive, although it's not clear to what degree. Because she was never formally trained, she currently lacks any real powers.
The most obvious way in which the force manifest itself is through her vision. Viseria has the unusual trait of force sight. This ability makes her more observant of her surroundings, though it otherwise works more or less the same as regular vision. She also has impressive instincts, although far from the level of a Jedi Master.
Viseria can also sense the presence of other force-sensitives, although this only works when she is close enough to the person in question ("close enough" usually meaning in the same room). However, because she lacks a thorough understanding of the force, this particular skill is something of a weakness for her, as she is easily overwhelmed whenever it takes effect.
Personality: Viseria can seem shy and distant at first. Unlike Nadia, she isn't always as willing to talk to strangers and often keeps to herself. Part of it is related to a sense of (literal) alienation and longing that stems from her lack of experience around other Miraluka, although that does not stop her from having a sense of humor. At least, that's how she acts off the track. On the swoop track she gets a lot more passionate. She usually tries to avoid fights when possible, although she is capable of defending herself or her friends if needed. On a more personal level, Viseria is very gentle and deeply caring. She is loyal towards her friends, and more than willing to stand up for them.
It was in the final days of the Old Republic, as Palpatine was in the final stages of organizing the Galactic Empire, that two young Miraluka had a child, a baby girl. In a different time, she would have had a promising future. She would have had a loving family, grown up studying the force, and perhaps become a wise leader to her people. Unfortunately, the rise of the Galactic Empire made that life impossible. Miraluka quickly became a subject of discrimination in the core worlds. Thousands were killed as the Empire came into power. Some entered the Rebel Alliance, while others struggled to hide in the Outer Rim.
For the unfortunate couple, it proved a difficult life. They spent time moving between various Outer Rim Worlds, though it was hard enough to find work and make enough money for the trips, let alone to feed their infant. To make matters worse, there were rumors about the Empire taking an interest in force-sensitive children, and stories quickly spread about parents being forced to watch as their babies were taken from them. Some said they were taken to be killed so that they wouldn't grow up to pose a threat to the Empire. Others said that they were indoctrinated to become dark lords themselves.
Either way, they couldn't doubt that the Empire would take action if their child was ever discovered, and while staying on Taris the couple made a difficult decision. This was no life for her, and they could not bear the thought of their child being captured and turned into an Imperial Slave. They also could barely afford to take care of her, and there was only one option that seemed like it offered her any chance at a life. Reluctantly, the baby was given to a local orphanage. The couple said their goodbyes, and left.
Viseria's life at the orphanage wasn't an easy one. The place was underfunded, and the staff could barely pull together enough to feed the children. On top of that, she remained something of a social outcast. She was sometimes bullied and teased by the others, and lacked any real friends among them. At the age of ten, she finally left, and began living on the street. She'd managed to get by squatting in abandoned apartments, and made what little she could scavenging in the Undercity. It was during this time that she met Nadia Rinlo, and the two quickly became close friends. For Viseria, the young Twi'lek was the closest thing she'd known to a sister, and the closest thing to family.
A few years later, Nadia and Viseria found themselves taken off the street by Gonzai, who offered them a home in the Black Vulkars. Though it took some time to adjust, the two quickly managed to fit into the gang. Their presence around the hideout gave them plenty of exposure to the world of swoop riding, and over the following years Viseria began learning the skills to work as a mechanic, while Nadia went on to become a rider.
Gonzai was originally reluctant to let Viseria ride herself, mistakenly thinking she was blind. However, an accident with one of the swoop riders resulted in Viseria taking over. She proved to be fast and quick-thinking on the track. Her connection to the force unknowingly influenced her instincts on the track, and while she never proved as popular as Nadia, she soon managed to establish herself as a formidable rider.
As her parents hoped, Viseria has found a life for herself which has (so far) been her own. She has a home, and something she can consider family. However, that has not left her without a sense of longing. Being left as an infant, she never knew her parents, and has never seen another Miraluka. This has left her with a minor sense of alienation and a feeling of being alone. Even with the family she does have, Viseria has often wondered if there are others like her. One day, she hopes, she will find another Miraluka and learn about her species.
Affiliation: Black Vulkars
Name: Nikita Baobab
Gender/Species: Human Female
Appearance: Tall and thin, usually likes to crop her dark hair short. She is usually seen dressed in the colors of the Baobab fleet, which includes a blue vest over a white shirt, with dark-colored pants and all-terrain boots. She also often carries a satchel which she uses to hold trade goods.
Skills: Given her heritage, it's no surprise that Nikita has some experience working as a trader. She is good at talking to people, a useful skill in order to get good deals. She is also trained to handle a blaster, although she uses her skills purely for self-defense.
Equipment: A blaster pistol for self defense. She also owns a satchel that she uses both for holding credits and for storing goods she has purchased or is planning to sell.
Personality: Well-intentioned, if sometimes financially motivated. She is generally a good person, and even as a businesswoman she usually tries to be honest. She strongly despises swindlers, and is more than willing to expose them once in a while.
History: The daughter of Mungo Baobab, Nikita was born on Manda and as a member of the Baobab family, she grew up learning the skills needed to be a good merchant. Had it not been for her father's unfortunate run-ins with an Emperor's hand, she may have gone on to run the fleet herself. Unfortunately, one too many instances of working against the Empire resulted in unwanted attention. The fleet was never outright destroyed, although it was banned from trading on Imperial Worlds with warnings that its ships were to be targeted if they entered Imperial space. This was a hue blow to the income of the fleet, who spent the following years operating in the outer rim.
However, things have changed in favor for the Baobab family. The Rebellion has managed to take a huge amount of territory from the Empire, and several worlds that had been off-limits are opening their doors once again to the Baobab family, who has proven more than willing to trade with the New Republic. Nikita's been sent to Taris, a world with a low Imperial Presence, where she is entrusted with re-establishing a market.
Ship: Although she has gained influence within the Baobab fleet, she only has one ship of her own, a small freighter.
Affiliation: New Republic, Baobab Merchant Fleet
Alignment: Good, money. Also good money
Name: Irella Moirlay
Gender/Species: Human Female
Appearance: Tall, thin woman, reasonably attractive. She often wears her long raven hair in a braid. For clothes, she usually fa, vors a trenchcoat in public, usually with a dress shirt underneath.
Skills: Being a private investigator on Taris, he has had more than his share of experiences working in the streets. Her main skills are in deduction and stealth, both needed for her profession. She is also experienced in hand-to-hand combat, a useful skill when dealing with Tarisian criminals.
Force Abilities: Mildly force-sensitive, though no real powers. It mainly enhances her intuition while investigating, allowing her to more easily spot clues.
Equipment: Blaster pistol for self-defense, a datapad containing information on the present case, and a holorecorder
Personality: As a private eye working on a world like Taris, she's not exactly the most optimistic person one can encounter. She drinks a lot, and can be rough, and cold; although at the end of the day she does generally try to do the right thing. Of course, on this world, it's hard to know exactly what the right thing is sometimes. Even if she does try to do good, she's also not above using unethical methods, up to and including extortion, bribery, blackmail, and murder, if she believes it will achieve her goals.
As a general rule, Irella tries to avoid getting mixed up in personal attachments with potential customers. She usually likes to know who she's working for, although she isn't above taking a "no questions asked" job if she's offered enough credits.
History: Irella grew up on Nar Shadaa, a crime-ridden world ruled by the Hutts. It wasn't an easy life for most on the planet, which was run largely by thugs and criminals. It wasn't a world where one could easily learn right from wrong, especially when one falls into trouble with the wrong people.
However, Irella did have one advantage that proved useful; she knew the streets well. As was expected on a crowded world, it seemed everyone was looking for someone for one reason or another, and sometimes they were keen enough that they were willing to offer credits to anyone who could get the job done.
Thus began Irella's work as a private eye. On Nar Shadaa, she slowly gained attention from various people ranging from criminal groups to Rebel informants, all willing to offer credits in exchange for her services.
Unfortunately, one too many run-ins with the Hutts proved Irella's undoing. As a result of being hired by several powerful Hutts who all had conflicting agendas, Irella began to find several of them offering large amounts of credits.
Fortunately, she managed to get off-world. Looking for a new plane where she could use her skills, Irella found Taris to be an equally crowded world where she hoped she could find work. Upon arriving, she managed to use the credits she had to purchase an apartment which soon turned into her office. Now she continues to work on Taris, making a living through whatever customers she can get.
Position: Private Investigator
Affiliation: Whoever her present client is
At the moment, I'm still waiting on a response, though I do believe there is some potential in some of these ideas. The detective in particular I thought could be interesting to try out. It's a role that would not only fit the Tarisian atmosphere (which itself could probably work as the backdrop for a sci-fi noir), it would also lend itself very effectively to player interaction, though if she does get approved I may need someone to offer her a case that can tie into the main narrative.
There were a few other partial ideas I came up with, which included a Mandalorian Warrior. There was that one idea I had for the ex-Royal Guard, only it seems to be agreed now that such a position would be too high a rank to make an appearance at this time. I am also open to reworking some of the ideas I had for Riv Needa into a new PC, though I think I'll give that one some time. Then of course there was the idea that if anyone wants to have a really annoying and unnecessary comic relief I could try and make the RPG's Jar Jar.
