Liano had entered the room, which was followed by an extended period of silence. The silence made me feel very uneasy, as if Fate was just setting things up for something bad to happen. I found myself fiddling with the book in my pocket as I waited for something to be said. What came next was a little bit of a surprise.

"Huh... When I think about it, you're the first one on the team to ask me that." Of course I had been asked similar questions by others before the team, and as such had a large range of tall tales to choose from. "Well, it happened a long time ago, in a Koro far, far away." I did a little movement of my arms just for the added effect.

"Back when I was young, my father was a prominent architect and a man of great power. He loved my mother, and we were a very close family. However, unbeknownst at the time to my mother and I, he had formerly worked for an organization of assassins." I did a quick movement of my arms for emphasis.

"However, they did not accept his leaving of their ranks for his family, so they sent one of their best assassins to make sure he could never reveal any of their secrets. It was a female assassin they had sent, my father's own sister. she killed both of my parents, and I only survived because my mother had thrown herself over me to save my life." I put one hand clutched into a fist up to my chest, and leaned my head downward as if I was mourning.

"It was hours I spent there under my mothers corpse before anyone came and found me. But the image of the assassin had been burned into my mind, and as time came and went I found more and more women to be cruel monsters. Thus, is from where my fear stems."

OOC: I think it's pretty obvious, but Barthel's story is... a little bit of an exaggeration. XD

  • IC: Theriss

She carefully and calmly counted through the money, each coin moving carefully through her hand. She had a mind for numbers, you couldn't get far in her line of work if you lost track of money anywhere along the way. Far too many people were more than eager to attempt to swindle her, all it took was skill in math, and everything would run smoothly. That was why it came as such an unpleasant surprise to her that she had miscounted at least three times since she had begun. She found it much harder to think about the money laying before her than it should have been: she was only in this team for that money, after all. But it left a strange and sickening feeling, a mixture of her determination and something else.

That something else was connected to Barthel's response, but anything more was far beyond the attention she was willing to allow it. If she started thinking about such, then it would grow in her mind. She couldn't allow herself to feel guilt over what had happened. It was all due to Barthel's own actions that he had suffered. Unless he managed to change, it would likely happen again and again with different people over time. He was the one who had said nothing until his explosive outburst, she had merely been the unintentional catalyst.

She paused her counting, realizing that once again her counted number did not match the coins she had before her. Closing her eyes, she tried to calm her thoughts, to focus on what was most important. This money was what she needed, it was the only thing between her and the horrendous life she had once been forced to suffer through. Barthel was merely a piece in her money-making plan, and if it came right down to it he could easily be replaced with someone who had less... issues to deal with.

She knew it was true, it was logically sound... but why didn't that make counting the money she had earned from their work any easier?

She almost missed LoJak speaking to her, caught up in her own mind. Slowly, she turned her head to face him with her default expression of calmness. "I does indeed, he certainly seems to be far more afraid than I would have imagined. I wonder then, why it is that he never said anything before now, allowing it to merely build up inside him. If he was unhappy with the way he was treated, then it is up to him to speak up about it. But speaking of something and shouting it amid a pathetic rage are two very different things. A greater level of consideration does appear to be required, but it was his own actions that lead towards this occurrence."

Geklan remained silent, having tucked the tablet away. Feeling that he wasn't being observed, he let his mind wander. A small frown appeared on his face, which was devoid of its mask. After all, he was a Lesterin.

The conflict between Theriss and Barthel sounded a lot like the one he'd had with Theriss over the chair. So much like it that it was scary, in fact. Still, Geklan felt that it wasn't wise to mention the similarities.

He didn't want to end up having to apologize to Theriss, after all.

  • IC: Iraanus let out a short bark of laughter, a stark contrast to Destian's barely restrained rage. "So our old friend's returned, huh?" He grabbed the note from Destian and glanced it over. "I get that you haven't gotten to crack anyone's skull open recently, Destian, but I dunno if this'll require such ... extreme measures. Scare him a little, maybe. Show up at this" - he glanced down - "five six seven West Ussal Street (is that even a real place?) and remind him what we said about causing trouble, drill him about his plans for this koro. Tell the Ussalry to keep an eye on him while we're at it. Of course, if things go south" - he shrugged - "I think you still have dibs on his head, right?"

"Mighty appreciated, sir" Helios obliged, before he exited Hahli's hut with a quick wave to Eutuchia.

"Alright, down by the docks, eh? Shouldn't be too hard" Helios reasoned as he took off through the streets, hapazardly navigating his way through Ga-Koro in the direction of the docks.

Tragic, to say in the least. I was surprised, Barthel had just shared a very personal past, something I could never bring myself to do. In some ways, I could relate, understand his pain, sympathize with him though I didn't dare admit it openly. Not sure if I ever would.

    I only mustered a simple "I'm sorry."

"You're absolutely right" LoJak agreed with the Theriss. "If it bothered him that much, or at all, Barthal should have had the courage to speak up for himself. He is certainly deserving of blame. But surely not all of it? He made an ignorant comment, another strike against him, but we helped cause the event by countering him with our actions. Now, it wasn't entirely our fault because we didn't know the extent of his phobia, but we participated in escalating affairs and so we must assume some of the responsibility. It takes two Toa to dance the mamba, after all."

LoJak motioned to the small pile of widgets on the table, reaching for the currency. "Mind if I double-check the amount? It can't hurt, and I don't entirely trust Geklan" he whispered. In truth, LoJak had noticed that Theriss had been counting the widgets for far longer than she should have, stopping halfway and returning to the beginning. She had something on her mind, so LoJak had given her an offer of help that wouldn't mean damaging her pride.

  • IC: VailWater. Its coolness washed over him and seeped into his pores. Gentle fingers brushed against his chest, a hushed voice forcing the memories back in. They were of forgotton times, long gone, when the world wasn't such a painful place. An invisible force pulled him out of the oceans nostalgic embrace just as quickly as he had been submerged.Vail's eyes fluttered open to a bright blue sky. The heads of his comrades loomed over him against the surreal backdrop, seemingly hovering above him in the endless expanse of azure. That's when he remembered their visit to Ta-Koro. He winced, completely and utterly embarrassed of himself. He had passed out as a result of absorbing a puny fire. Downright pathetic. He was even worse than Crasaro was in his drunken state, and him and Voulge hadn't even dunked he Toa of Crystal.Vail propped himself up onto his elbows. Droplets of water dripped from the creases of his kanohi, cascading to the ground in a diminutive shower. He squinted against the invasive light. "How long was I out?" he groaned, more in self-loath than fatigue. He really had to step up his game if he were to compete with Toa such as these that stood before him. Their elemental powers were honed much more than those of his own. However, this was not entirely a downfall, for Vail made up for it in his skill with a blade. It was only a matter of time before they would all be awestruck by the damage Persephone could do. Which reminded him, he was so very thirsty.

  • IC: VailThe Toa of Fire was flushing despite himself. He was glad that the shade of his armor was the color it was. He pushed himself to a sitting position. "Oh shut up, I'm just out of practice, that's all." Although the words were somewhat harsh, he said them in a blithe tone. It wasn't just that either, for he was also functioning on a very low amount of energy. He planned to replenish himself as soon as night fell.

Malak'et trudged onwards. The previous few weeks had not been kind to the Le-Koro native. After his business proposition to Akiri Hahli had failed the weather had taken a turn for the worst. A cold spell had prevented Malak'et from travelling with his precious wares for fear they would not survive the inclement outdoor conditions. Instead Malak'et had been forced to remain indoors, taking care of the potted plants and rationing his widgets. Food prices had gone up more than he'd realized since he'd been on the road.

A few days ago the skies had finally cleared, not that it helped Malak. The time it would take to travel to another Koro would be too much for the plants - they needed to be in the proper weather conditions soon, or they would perish. And if the plants in those pots died, Malak's plans would be derailed even further, his work all for nothing.

No, now he could not fail. He needed this to work.

    So he trudged.

He soon arrived at Akiri Hahli's hut once more. He was about to knock when the door flung open, a Toa walking out. Malak let him pass, releasing the wagon he was carrying and walked inside. Eustachia was there, sitting behind the desk.

"Hello again" Malak said, scratching the scruff that had appeared on his face after he'd dropped his razor in the water four days ago. "I was hoping I could meet with Akiri Hahli again."

He shook his head in hopes to keep the memories of his past at bay. The last thing he needed was to be caught up in his own dreams. His expression turned to one of sincerity as he turned to face Voulge and Crasaro. "Thanks for dragging me out of there, by the way. Left lying in the streets of Ta-Koro wouldn't have exactly left a heroic impression."

I was dumbstruck for a second or two. He had actually believed that story. He was either extremely gullible or extremely trusting. If I had known he was going to believe what I had said, I would have chose one of the more grand lies I had.

It took me a few seconds before I could respond. "Um... Thank you." In my head, I duly noted that he believed me. If he was willing to believe what I had told him, I thought, I might be able to make use of that at a later time.

  • IC: It was bound to happen eventually.

The path was covered in green moss. Iraira's feet crushed a soft pattern into the coastal forest, the sound of each step softly dampened. In one hand was her boarding axe while her trophy from the lighthouse hung at the ready on her back. The serpentine roots of trees poked from the ground, keeping her mind cautious with each step. Above the densely packed foliage was the midday sun, green light and dappling her shimmering armor. To most Iraira seemed like a toa out for a stroll in the woods, meditating in the natural surroundings. In truth she was headed to a specific destination.

From amidst the trees rose a ruin so choked with plants it was impossible to tell if the masonry had not simply been born from bark and lichen. The gray stones told a story of a guard house lost to time and Makuta's reign. Scorch marks from the final battle inside its halls stained exposed portions of the granite floor. She remembered the blood and the screaming with a wave of nostalgic grief, but then she always remembered her first and last failure when venturing to the site.

"The past is the past," she muttered to herself, then busied with finding the secret entrance. Lowering herself onto her good knee the marine scraped away at the moss covering a corner of the floor until the seams of a trap door became visible. It was made of sturdy material, the plant matter regrown by a toa of plantlife hiding in a nearby treehouse after each coming and going. The doorway groaned open to expose a cavernous maw, rough hewn stairs descending into the darkness. Stepping in, Iraira closed the door behind her and plunged into a false midnight.

The stairwell wound and turned in a small maze of branching side tunnels, the correct pattern memorized and followed as she walked with a hand against the wall for balance. The labyrinth stretched deep into the belly of the earth, but despite the depth a steady stream of sweet, fragrant air kept the toa company from masterfully crafted air ducts in the stone ceiling. At the end there was a flickering glow from a solitary lightstone. After so long in the dark even the single orb of luminescence forced her into a rapid series of blinks. From behind a solid iron door there came the standard question.

    "Password?"

Iraira answered without hesitation and the the sound of several complex locks echoed through the labyrinth. Taking the lightstone from its sconce in the wall she held it aloft. A marine appeared, thick volume on historical treatises tucked under her arm. "Viper Iraira! I never thought you'd come." There was a mischievous glint in the woman's eyes as she spoke.

"Really," Iraira said, playing along as she stepped through the door, "because I was here last week for his psychology appointment. Any new developments?"

The marine shrugged her head in thought as she locked the string of security devices. Several keys were used. "Nothing much, though he's been staring at the bigot with a bit of drool around his mouth."

"He's been doing that for a long time. Any witty remarks, puns or otherwise horrible conversation attempts?"

    "None."

"Well," Iraira said disconcerted, "that could mean two things..."

    ~

Salute me readers, I'm a dangerous criminal. Yes, I'm evil and nefarious, have a horribly barking laugh to instill fear, and will totally steal your children away in the night for a snack. As you can see most of that is seditious rumor (I won't say which isn't) propagated by my cell mates. I'm propped against the back of a cushy sofa in a little room down the hall from my cell. There's a great white straight-jacket around me, as if I was going to be doing anything so stupid. Really, it's hilarious what someone does the moment I walk into a room. Okay, it's more like led into a room these days but you get my drift. They freeze, petrified, and then get all moody like they haven't relieved themselves in months. I find myself forced into a pair of cuffs along with the usual straightjacket. Forced is a little dramatic, since I'm practically holding out my arms to make it easier, but let's take the marine's point of view for a moment. My parents raised me to be sympathetic of others. I guess that's why I turned out like this.

And so, here I am and here we are sitting on a curvy sofa with the lightstone lit ceiling hovering above me. While we wait let's count the tiny holes in the stone.

    ~

The door opened with the jangle of keys and Iraira stepped inside. She was unarmed, her weapons left behind in a lock box near the entrance of the prison. Inside was a wooden chair. With controlled steps she crossed the room and pulled the chair over to a reclining sofa. The onu-lesterin smiled happily and blew an air kiss.

"Hi sweetie, thought you'd never come. I was getting so bored in my cell with no one to pick on."

"Enough," Iraira said while sitting down. The marine by the door closed it and the two occupants listened to the locks click back into place. "Dispense with your childish behavior for this session."

The lesterin gave a knowing wink. "So you're the bad cop today and we're going to talk about adult stuff. Oh this puts the straight-jacket in a whole new perspective."

Ignoring the remark Iraira clasped her hands together, leaned forward, and began her questions. They were the same questions she asked at each visit. Nothing ever changed, except the man's answers and her temper. "Why did the kumu Islets fall?"

"It have vertigo from the waves more than likely," he said while rubbing his nose on the sofa. "I'm sorry, I've got a terrible urge to sneeze... Can I borrow a napkin or something? You can have it back of course."

    "Kumu Islets. Talk."

"But I am talking! Of for sweet marrow's sake can't you ever have a sense of humor? No? Fine, I'll just have to work with a defective product. I don't know why they sank. They just did." He did his best to shrug, but his restraints removed any comedic potential he might have gained from the act. Iraira let her eyes gaze at his face long enough to gather what she needed.

"You're a liar, and you enjoy lying," she said calmly. A hand brushed against her mask as she thought, then returned to her lap as her legs crossed and she leaned back. "Why are you a liar? What are you so desperately trying to hide?"

He twisted his head to look back at Iraira. There was a mock sense of puzzlement splashed across his face. "And I thought this was an interrogation. If we were on a date you could have just said so. Though, I'll admit this really isn't the kind of atmosphere most people choose for dates. I could give you a few lessons if you'd like, somewhere romantic like a concert, or a butcher shop. Maybe we could talk about our pasts there, get all chummy, have a couple drinks. You know, we might even go back over some of our earliest memories together. Now those were the days, all that chaos and swashbuckling. I don't know how you can stand to sit here so hideously normal after being so, shall we say, adventurous? Later you could put me back in these chains. How's that sound, eh Eye-rah?"

"Like you want to spend the rest of your life an old lonely lesterin in a cell. That's how it sounds. But–" Iraira shifted weight in her chair and unclenched her jaw "– would some fresh air and sunlight make you more interested in telling the truth?"

    "Yes."

"Maybe you'll have your chance to se the outside world again. One chance. If any of the information you give is inaccurate you'll rot in your cell. That understood?"

The lesterin held his tongue for once. He closed his eyes and seemed to contemplate the offer, as if imagining a delicate cake. A minute passed while Iraira got up and paced the walls, impatient and yet knowing this could be her only chance to make the cannibal useful in any way. Part of her wished Lohkar had slashed his cutlass right across this man's black armored neck, but she also admired how the captain had shown such restraint given the dire circumstances of the Kumu Islets Expedition. She heard a word, but didn't catch it. "What?"

"Okay. Yes. When do I get to go to a concert?"

  • OOC: Sorry for the wait. No internet here.

    IC: Yaddrokk - Marine HQ

With the door business concluded, he plodded back to the jail.

    IC: Suran - Same

Suran took the note and quickly read it before offering Helios a smile. "Excellent. A sword is only as effective as its edge. The same can be said of a greenhouse and its structure. Do you need help locating the greenhouses?"

  • IC: Helios (Marine HQ)

"Wise words, I guess" Helios responded with a nervous smile.

"The greenhouses are underwater, are they not?" Helios asked.

  • IC: Voulge

Voulge turned to look at Vail and Crasaro and then proceeded to turn back towards ga-koro and began to walk towards it and hopefully the rest of the team.

Short time skip of an hour or so

Voulge opened up the doorway to the Inn they had been staying at and smiled to Theriss as he saw her sitting at a table speaking with Lojak and he approached the two

"Well well seems when the Papa ussal is away the little ussals will talk.." he says outloud to Theriss and Lojak

  • OOC: I have journeyed long and hard across school assignments and chores. I have braved the dragon of procrastination and the demon of no free time. I HAVE RETURNED with a short post. :P IC: "Akira enjoys torturing us, I'm fairly certain." Erif shrugged as he walked up to the others, looking like he'd been up for hours. He was a Knight like Fiera, but the loose grip on his bow and relatively cool manner didn't conjure up the mental image of a knight. Or a Ta-Toa either, for that matter. OOC: Marianka soonish.

    IC: Xarya (Naho Bay)

"Sounds about right" Xarya admitted with a nod in Erif's direction, straightening her robe a little as she regarded Akira where she sat with Noira and Mila.

"And we have the scars to show for it" she added, pointing to a small notch on her cheek where her Kakama had been dented in by Fiera in a training match, boy, what fun.

Of course, Fiera herself had had to worry about that nasty twitch she'd been stuck with for two week after being repeatedly zapped by Xarya, but at least that went away.

IC: Suran - Marines HQ"That is correct."

    IC: Helios (Marine HQ)

"Good, good. Now, the secretary also mentioned that I would be accompanied by two marines at all times whenever I run maintenance on the greenhouses" Helios continued.

  • IC: Suran

"Ah." Being in charge of detention and HQ security most of the time, that wasn't so much his jurisdiction. But two guards to spare, he did have. "Let us see who is available at the moment, then."

He strode smoothly toward the cell block and gave two sharp whistles. When Yaddrokk showed up again, he motioned for him to go back. Yaddrokk's skills were the most suited to the post he had now.

Two NPC marines answered the whistle. A Ga-Matoran and a Matoran of Crystal. Suran curtly explained their duties before turning back to Helios. "Do you need to know anything more?"

  • IC: Vail followed Voulge through the Inn's door. The place wasn't nearly as crowded as it had been the night before. The Toa of Fire quickly spotted Theriss and LoJak sitting not far away. That's when Voulge greeted them, referring to himself as "Papa Ussal."Vail stifled a chuckle before approaching the table.

  • IC: Crasaro

Crasaro still found Voluge's obsession with Ussals odd. funny, but odd. Maybe one day, they should get an Ussal for him... Crasaro shook his head to get rid of any Ussal thoughts. He went towards the table, hoping that Theriss and LoJak were in a good mood. Theriss seemed very absorbed in counting the widgets on the table, which wasn't that unusual.

  • OOC: Viima and Tivanu from Ta-Wahi.

    IC Viima

    (Ga-Wahi):

The dark red sky of Ta-Wahi turned to blue as Viima and Tivanu crossed the vague border between it and Ga-Wahi. Here the nature felt closer to you in a way it did not in the Ta-Wahi volcanic region. The trickle of water could be heard anywhere, thanks to the several rivers that were numerous in this district.

"Ga-Wahi is a nice place", Viima said. "It's not as restless as Le-Wahi, but still has the natural feeling I like. And the clear sky, not hindered by large trees."

Before Tivanu had a chance to answer, Viima froze.

"Tivanu, look", he whispered. "A Ghekula."

Indeed there was a Ghekula nearby.

Tivanu looked at the creature and sighed

"Hmm.. ok and what does that have to do with anything.. though it yes Ga-wahi seems a alot calmer."

"Well, mostly I'm just concerned with how I'm going to make the trip down to the seafloor. You don't have a spare Kaukau lying around, do you, or is it air bladders you're using?"
