The Capella was suitably nice; the two Kalta didn’t have reservations, but the restaurant was willing to accommodate the two Toa, even if they did have to sit at one of the all-heights tables. Zuey had to sit on her leg to get an extra boost, and Skorm still had to hunch over the table. Still, the dinner was nice, and the restaurant was quiet; not quite peak hours yet.

“Big guy, what’s on your mind? You’ve barely touched your mousse.” Zueya punctuated her question by reaching across the table and taking a scoop out of Skorm’s dessert with her own spoon.

The massive Ba-Toa shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “At the Sanctum, I overheard that Captain Kozraa is putting together a team to go into the Dark Walk, checking out the reports of Rahkshi. It got me thinking of when…” Skorm sighed. “… of when I was in Mangaia.”

Zueya paused, spoon in her mouth. No wonder he didn’t want to eat something sweet right now. “Ah. Are you okay?”

He let out a rumbling chuckle, stabbing into his dessert. “Right now I’m fine. But I’m wondering if I should be going on that expedition; of the Kalta, I’m the only one with experience down there, and I’ve encountered Rahkshi. Aelied would want me to go.”

The Vo-Toa finished off her mousse. “But do you want to go?”

“Yes… yes I do. Maybe down there I’ll get some answers. And there is always the off chance we can find someone from the Wall.”

The Wall. Casanuva had started it back at the Arsenal; a list of the Kalta’s most wanted criminals. Most were members of the Legacy, though Zaktan of the Piraka also had his name and a sketch on there. Zueya smiled. “Well, I’m going with. Call it stress-testing the new armor, call it supporting you, call it my duty to Ko-Koro, but you don’t have to go back down there alone.”

Skorm smiled back at Zueya. “Thank you dear.” He didn’t have to say any more; she knew. Thankfully, that also let him finish off his mousse in two massive bites. Quickly paying (and leaving a sizable tip), and he and Zueya were on their way.

They both had their gear already, no need to head back to the Arsenal; Aelied’s instructions were to be ready even if they weren’t on duty. The couple made their way to the Ko-Koro Dark Walk; while they had both seen it, neither had been inside. There was a group of adventurers already there; Skorm recognized the Bo-Toa that had been with Reordin. They saw Lieutenant Torin of the Sanctum Guard there; Skorm had met her briefly before, and her name had come up when he had heard about the Dark Walk patrol she was putting together.

After a glance at Zueya and a nod from her, Skorm took the lead. “Lieutenant Torin? Zueya and Skorm of the Toa Kalta. We heard you were putting together an expedition to go down into the Dark Walk; we came to volunteer. Sorry if we’re a little late, we’re off-duty and it took us a bit to get our gear.”

Zueya wiped her mask with her hand to make sure there weren’t any bits of food left.

He frowned when he heard the Vortixx call the outpost his home. Perhaps it wasn't so abandoned after all? When the stranger appeared to be eager to end the discussion and move on, his frown deepened.

"Wait, before you depart, I must tell you that the Outpost is not empty. You may find three individuals there. One of them, the Le-Toa, was my travelling companion. But the other two... well, let me simply say that they are either honest treasure hunters or lying murderers. I do not know if they can be trusted either way, so beware."

He respected the Vortixx' desire to move on, so he turned around and, with a simple motion of his hand, solidified the snow in the stranger's path to carry his weight better. "There, this should make your journey easier. Stay safe, and may the light of Ak'rei'an shine upon you."

    "Thank you," he said.

Something seemed... slightly off about this Toa. For a member of a cult that had helped the Makuta worshippers conquer a Koro, he seemed remarkably willing to be open about who and what he was. Perhaps he didn't know what the others had done, and what had become of them? Maybe he thought Ko-Wahi was still under occupation? Or perhaps it was simply a test to see how Minnorak would react?

"Just so you know... the followers of Ak'rei'an don't have most positive reputation in Ko-Koro right now," he said, choosing his words carefully. "It may be better not to mention who you're affiliated with unless you're sure you're in trustworthy company."

  • NPC: Lieutenant Alka Torin, Ihu-Koro Highlanders

The Ko-Toa glanced around at the assembly as he considered the Turaga's words. Truth be told, he agreed with her on most factors and a few she didn't say--It wasn't his job to complain as to what kind of aid this mission got, but he still wasn't exactly happy that an expedition into the Dark Walk of all places was being used as an opportunity for rookies to cut their teeth. His unreadable face lightened somewhat when Ronan approached, a nod of acknowledgment going to the only other registered member of the Highlanders being sent on this mission. Having at least one other boded well, particularly with the Kalta arriving. Wouldn't do to have fewer Highlanders present than the Koro's sworn Toa Team.

He had a lot of opinions about that as well, but again. He wasn't being sent here for his opinions.

"Yes, a book. Beyond notes on an artifact that my commanding officer believes is key to our success against the hordes of darkness, it's possible the hideout holds information on Senemos' associates. And we were asked to provide a final exercise for the recruits to the Ko-Koro Guard. I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of volunteers we have, though you all should know that this will be perhaps the most dangerous thing you have done in your lives. And yes, I do include liberating this Koro among those."

His eyes flicked back to Skri. "We're in agreement, at least on that fact. Our primary goal is to return with as many as we enter, if this method doesn't work for retrieving the notes we'll try another."

He processed the introductions of the others and nodded. Useful to know talents and names, then his attention turned to Safina.

"I would be indebted to hear the details of your ingress."

OOC: @ the darkwalk group. I'm going to try tagging those I'm going to be definitely waiting on a response from at least until we get into the swing of things. @Perp is particularly relevant to this one.

What the Vortixx said almost made him chuckle. Did they have a positive reputation anywhere? He realized more and more just how badly the Brotherhood had ruined the reputation of the faithful. They had gambled everything on their alliance with Makuta's servants, only to lose it all. Now they were alone and forsaken, himself included.

He smiled faintly. "Do not worry, I know. I have heard the news. Yet I fell in battle defending the Koro, so I expect them to be at least somewhat grateful for my sacrifice."

There was brief silence as he looked into the distance, towards his home, even if he couldn't see it from so far away. "Farewell then, stranger," he said quietly and walked past him.

  • IC: Nichou [The Massif, Chapel] (Many weeks prior)

"How do you think this war with the new Ko-Koro will end?"

Nichou paused for a moment, the Onu-Matoran visibly reconsidering his own question.

"You see, I could count on one hand how many skirmishes I've been adjacent to. Understanding a battle is beyond me, let alone a siege or a war or.... whatever we're calling what's happening in Ko-Koro. You're a Toa, and not just any Toa - you're our Kaitiaki. You've kept these threats at bay, you understand the situation more than the gossip of the occasional merchant."

"No matter how much I've built here to help the refugees, there are always those that ask when they can go back, or if there is news of their friends who are trapped inside, and I never have an answer. I don't think I've ever been as happy as I am here, but... sometimes I think about these grim details and I feel... lost."

"Happy refuge can be... intoxicating," Brykon said. "Placid solace is healing to the soul, and that is the currency we function with here. And when the wounds are sealed and the scabs fall off, we send the people back into the rest of Mata Nui with renewed appreciation for all of life's misbegotten brambles. People can go back when they decide they are strong enough to deal with the darkness out there. For now, they're safe here."

The toa-protector of the Massif rested his head on a burly fist. "Last I heard from my spies, there were forays coming from the sea and the alpine passes, led by Reordin and Stannis. The firespitter had gone ahead—I'm not sure what Oreius hopes to accomplish by himself, but it's doubtful he'll find it on his own terms. You can't out-muscle anyone out of Ko-Koro, you have to carve them out with strategy. But news from the koro has been all but choked to stillness. All the word I hear comes from the Wahi, everywhere but inside the town."

Nichou looked almost surprised at the mention of spies - to think the reassuring Toa-protector of a haven like the Massif managed spies was initially a shock. Within a moment, the surprise visibly wore off, as Nichou concluded that such a network was necessary for Brykon's duties. After all, how else could Brykon have the information necessary to coordinate a defense, or answer questions like Nichou's?

The Onu-Matoran's optics shifted towards the floor as he parsed the information. The Toa Maru were making their move... or, moves. Nichou hoped their different approaches were part of a larger strategy, but in his heart he knew it was a fool's hope. Rumors of their unity waning since the attack on Ta-Koro were confirmed by these actions.

"That's good news. Hopefully despite their... lack of unity, the Maru can free those trapped inside the Koro. The lack of news from inside the Koro itself has been disheartening - when I arrived here, I was corresponding with a friend inside. His last letter arrived when the city was in lockdown after the assassination..."

Nichou thumbed a pocket, pulling out a worn parchment, neatly folded. He unfolded the letter, took another glance at the words inscribed within, and sighed.

"I haven't heard anything since, and not knowing the fate of yet another friend nags me to no end. It is, at the very least, reassuring to know that I’m not alone in my blindness to what goes on behind Ko-Koro’s walls."

"Certainly not," Brykon said. "But I'm sure the Maru will succeed where others have failed. What they lack in Unity they more than make up for in Duty... and stubbornness."

Nichou chuckled, his own faith in the Maru bolstered by the Fe-Toa's confidence. "Of course."

"I'm sure the only reason Ko-Koro hasn't already been recaptured is the Maru deciding the best way to intervene, and finding the proper timing to do so. If their assault has begun, Echelon's reign is already at its end."

He nodded slowly and agreed with a long Mmmmhrrmmm. "You know Stannis well enough. That man has a certain sense of timeliness—it's never convenient for anyone, but it usually best for everyone. Most people write him off as a fraud or charlatan, some think he's actually some divine puppet, but I  think neither is true. He's a Believer, and strong enough sense of Faith can lead to all manner of things."

"What will you do next, builder Nichou?" he said, looking a bit more alight as he swerved the conversation back to the matoran. "You won't stay here forever. Fate's strings are too connected to you."

OOC: To be continued, and much sooner than the last delay. Decided I'd jump the gun and take the time to format and get a good chunk of it out early, @Caedast, thanks for the wonderful jam so far.

  • IC: Safina - Near Ko-Wahi Dark Walk entrance

“Certainly,” she replied, drawing closer to the group, their numbers having increased, subsequently blocking more and more of the chill. She would have been out of the squall, striding down the underground highway towards Onu-Koro by now, had she not happened to mention the very experience she was to promptly recite, to the guardswoman outside the perimeter.

However, fate had decided to take her on a different path this day, much like it had several months ago…

“There were… let’s see if I can remember… around ten or eleven of us. Ten - yes, I remember. Myself, one Matoran plus his Ussal, a Vortixx and two Skakdi mercenaries… and five Toa. We met in Onu-Koro, at the time they were posting notices looking for extra help clearing the local Dark Walk of Rahkshi, and that’s what our group intended to do. We had a handful of lightstones between us, plus two of our number were Toa of Fire and Plasma, and they led us down into the depths first…”

She glanced back over in the direction of the gaping black maw, now partially obscured by Sanctum and Highlander forces making ready for their own expedition. She continued, looking hard into the eyes of the Lieutenant: “That darkness will decimate the range of any source of light you bring into it. It… knows when it has you in its grasp. It burrows into your mind and- and tells you that you need to leave post-haste. It will drive a stake of fear deep into even the bravest of warriors. I can’t explain it any more than that.

“Regarding the Rahkshi themselves, I also concur with the Bo-Toa here, as well as your own assessment, Lieutenant. Sending inexperienced warriors against Rahkshi is suicide. Of the ten my previous group entered the Dark Walk with, only seven of our number returned. Our mistake was fighting them at close-range - not that we had much of a choice. With the weak radiance of our lightstones, and the intermittent flares of our two guides, the Rahkshi descended upon us from shadowed corners of the passage we could scarcely see. One of the Skakdi was dead within seconds, and we had no time to make space between the assailants and the rest of our group. I and the Matoran were of little use compared to the rest of our number, and we were limited to striking at the beasts only from opportunities made possible by the other, stronger warriors dividing their attention.

“The two Fe-Toa as well as the Onu-Toa among us provided the bulk of our strength, creating barriers and slowing the Rahkshi’s progress as we began to retreat back towards the entrance, though we were ambushed by another group of the beasts behind us, having either let us pass earlier or skirted around us through some unseen passage. One of the Fe-Toa was felled and we had to split our focus. The tech-sword of the Vortixx made short work of one of our ambushers, thankfully, and severing the limbs of the second allowed the Matoran and I an opportunity to strike at the kraata within its carapace. Finishing that task, we turned to find the second Skakdi nearly dead, impaled upon the weapon of a purple-clad Rahkshi, his last act to silence its ear-splitting screaming with the detonation of an explosive the sellsword was carrying.

“The remainder, damaged by the explosion, we were able to kill much more easily, though ‘easily’ takes on a much different meaning when dealing with the sons of Makuta. Having caught our breath, three of us lay dead… and six Rahkshi. Only six…” Her voice grew weak, and she closed her eyes, drawing a deep breath. When she opened them again, they settled on the Exo-Matoran nearby, a dark silhouette against the white expanse beyond. “I honestly cannot determine whether or not our actions were worth the loss of three lives. We returned up the Walk, the dead in tow - all of our dead. Upon our ascent, we estimated that we had only ventured down one-hundred to two-hundred bio before we were beset upon by Rahkshi. After returning to the city, the souls of our compatriots were commended to the care of the Great Spirit, and their bodies laid to rest. Our foes were given to the greater minds of Onu-Koro and recycled for a more noble purpose.”

Her gaze swept back across the group of nine. “If the rumours about Makuta are true, and the Rahkshi have increased their cunning, I implore you - keep the non-adept in reserve. I will fight with you - and to a greater extent than last time I descended down that abyss, thanks to the machine currently in my possession - that is why I accepted it as a gift from Akiri Nuparu. But I cannot bear another needless slaughter, like those three poor souls we had to pull from the darkness among the litter of Rahkshi corpses. There is no room for foolhardiness against the forces of darkness.”

She let out another breath - one she was unaware she was holding in, and looked to the Lieutenant once more, straightening her posture and hardening her tone.

“That is all I have to say on the matter.”

Ronan listened in silence to the Turaga’s tale, her face pensive. This was not truly news to her - she knew of the dangers of the Dark Walks, if not firsthand. Their deadly reputation, it seemed, was no exaggeration.

A hint of frustration crept unbidden into her mind, and was quickly banished. It was little use to dwell on Ko-Koro’s foolhardy decision to send new recruits into those depths. Funny, though, that like the Turaga, they too would travel as ten. She looked over her fellows once again; Which of us, I wonder, will not return?

The Toa of Earth had heard of that expedition. He hadn't been on it- he had been patrolling the Koro at the time. But it has been the talk of the Ussalry Barracks for a week after that. He knew what he was getting into when he had signed on with Plagia.

It was worth it though. Any strike against the darkness was worth the risk of death. His only fear was another failure for him. Ever since he had become a Toa, he had ended up just missing what was important. He had been in the ILF, but missed the liberation of Ko-Koro. He had been an Ussalman, but had missed the battle of the Rama Hive. He didn't want to be useless. He didn't want his destiny to be that of a Matoran.

  • IC: Skorm & Zueya - Ko-Koro Dark Walk Entrance

The Kalta were silent as Safina recounted her story. It made Skorm revisit his experiences in Mangaia. The underground had not seemed nearly so hostile then… had he been called to Mangaia? Was it Mata Nui guiding him to eventual redemption, or the Antidermis that had coursed through his body seeking to return home?

Zueya, meanwhile, was studying the others on the expedition. Another Vo-Toa was nice to see, and her mind churned through possibilities for what they could do together. Two Toa with Haus, as well as the Turaga, though she would likely be in her Exo-Matoran. The Bo-Toa that had been with Reordin, a Ko-Toa, an Onu-Toa (a welcome sight underground), a Fe-Toa, and even a heavily-armed Vortixx. A solid line-up, if she were to choose one. Personally, she looked forward to seeing the Exo-Matoran in action; Tarkahn had brought his, and she had seen several others at work during the reconstruction, but never in combat.

Skorm stepped up, trying his best to look nonchalant, even though he was the tallest Toa present. He could feel the stains on his mask, tingling, almost burning. One of his constant physical reminders of his time poisoned by Antidermis. “I’ve traveled to Mangaia and slew several Rahkshi as part of a larger party, we outnumbered them two-to-one and had the element of surprise. Do you know if I should expect anything different down there?”

"For one thing, we'll most certainly be outnumbered. Secondly, with the rumours the Rahkshi have rediscovered their cunning, unless you took them on before You-Know-What, you can expect more capable opposition." Ronan's voice was soft, and matter-of-fact, as if she were reading off groceries instead of reciting their odds of survival. "On top of that, as we've just learned, we'll be in total darkness. The Rahkshi will have the home field advantage, particularly because we're travelling toward a destination, so we'll have to deal with them both ways. Only a few of you seem to know each other, so we won't be functioning with the polish of a coordinated group. Also, they'll have the drop on us; from what I understand, there's no such thing as the element of surprise in the Dark Walks."

Ronan looked directly at Skorm, still maintaining her unaffected demeanour. "I think that's about it."

I took the lead outside. The Skakdi was not wrong. A snow pile was the best we'd be able to manage around here. Karv flanked me as I stepped outside. My Akaku let me look deeper than the snow that covered everything, and I scanned the area around us for a suitable spot. The blizzard had subsided, but some sort of wind and snowfall was still monotonously regular up here.

I could spot a deep crevice that had been filled with snow. That would do just fine. Karv got the instruction to start digging, and I started doing the same.

Gak was ever colder in Joskander's arms as he watched the two dig.  The Toa of Air wasn't entirely certain he ought to be letting the Skakdi out of his sight (or that "Bronk" was actually his name), but a grave was being dug, and he was holding the body to fill it.  At least this other Toa seemed to be on the level...

Charek's mind drifted as the rest of the crew discussed their mission.  Restless and anxious as ever after the liberation of Ko-Koro, he had been more than willing to sign himself up for the first major expedition he could find, but hearing the way the Po-Turaga spoke of the Rahkshi, it was dawning on him that he hadn't been involved in anything serious in quite some time.  Some part of him had been itching to see another fight for his life, certainly, but now that he could see one on the horizon...

It was just as well that he'd told Bhuko not to come.  The crippled Guardswoman had slept through Ko-Koro's entire occupation and reclamation; she was desperate to make up for what she saw as her own failure to save her home.  It had been a struggle to convince her not to accompany him, to remind her that a Matoran with no working legs and no weapons worth a darn wouldn't last two seconds in a fight to the death.  She was probably still sulking at Joskander's hut in Ihu.  He hoped she hadn't punched another hole in the front door.

"On top of that, as we've just learned, we'll be in total darkness..."

Ah, right.  Planning.  That was important.

"Excuse me," he said.  "How much of a problem is the darkness really going to be when we've got a couple Toa that can create our own light?  At the very least, I could probably blind you all pretty easy if I wanted to."

Zueya then pointed at Plagia: "I think we should be at opposite ends of the group; if we get separated, we should be able to sense out each other. Whether you're reinforcing the front with your Hau or covering us from behind is up to you; I can take the other position. But he," Zueya switched to Charek, "goes with one of us. We can amp his plasma flares if the dark is overwhelming."

Zueya took a breath, before scanning the rest of the assembled warriors. "Only other thing I can think of is to have..." Her mind blanked; she had never gotten the Bo-Toa's name. "... you grow some of those glowing cave plants periodically so we have a way back.”

Skorm held his comments; she had certainly grown more assertive since staying at the Koro.

She let the Toa of Lightning - only just now recognizing her plus the one whose behalf she spoke on as members of the Toa Kalta - finish speaking before interjecting. “I will join you two at the front of the formation if you would oblige.” Turning to look at her Exo-Matoran, she extended a finger in its direction before continuing.

“Can you see that device attached to the arm of the machine? That is the largest lightstone torch I could mount on it - it will still be curtailed by the shadows of the Dark Walk, but from what I can see among those gathered here, it is the greatest source of light in our possession.” She turned back to those assembled, her eyes darting between the Toa of Earth and Gravity proposed for point duty, the immediate death of the Skakdi in her previous expedition replaying in her head.

“I would be remiss to point out that your armor, while surely strong, is not nearly as tough as that of my machine. One of the first things I was taught during my martial training was that one’s defenses are the most paramount to any battle - that lesson has kept me alive thus far.”

She let a beat of silence play out before turning to the Highlander. “Your thoughts, Lieutenant?”

"Farewell," he replied, before continuing up the path the Ko-Toa had so kindly cleared for him.

The exchange, though brief, was strangely comforting. It was a reminder, however small, that not everyone on this island did things out of duty to some unseen deity, or for the promise of payment. Even the strangest of souls were capable of kindness.

He held that knowledge close as he continued up the path towards his home, wondering what awaited him there.

Brightly, the sun shone over head the icy white tundra of Ko-Wahi, and yet a frigid chill still remained, cold and frigid whenever the wind blew. Stepping out from the cave they had made into their home since first awaking, Ir'rask surveyed the vast white landscape ahead of them, once with their natural sight and then once again with their thermal sight, their optics shifting into hues of orange and blue. Nothing, good, that meant it was safe...assuming nothing was hiding.

Prowling out from their hidden dwelling, their unstrung bow over their shoulder with a wrapped sack of what little possessions they owned, the Skakdi began to make their way out across the snows, their wide, flat feet allowing them to just keep from sinking too deep.

The season was ending and game was growing scarce they knew. At this rate, they were going to have to resort to scavenging to survive. That, or dare to go south into Le-Wahi, into that hot, humid, deafening jungle. The idea brought pangs of annoyance to the Skakdi's head as they imagined it. No, they weren't going to go there, they were not going to resort to such lows. But how were they going to survive, they pondered.

As they thought on what they were going to do, the far-off distance sound of a tram peaked the very peripheral edges of their hearing, something that only them in such silent climates could have just made out. But it was that brief bit of noise that brought a thought to their mind, a wild, mad thought, but a thought nonetheless.

With that thought in mind, Ir'rask turned in their direction and made their way towards the noise, towards the outpost they knew existed in that direction. The Obsidian Outpost.

OOC: Ir'rask is open to interaction and is just arriving to the Obsidian Outpost

"Hey, maybe we shouldn't throw around plasma in a confined space?"

The only thing more dangerous than someone who knew nothing was someone who knew just enough to think they'd make an informed decision. Out of everybody gathered she had faith in—maybe — three or four of the people here. The Turaga seemed to genuinely know her stuff. Skri hadn't seen her in a fight yet, but she at least had the knowledge and the experience. Plag, of course, was her girl— no doubts there. Torin was competent, but playing his own game. No doubt about it. Korzaa hadn't said a word about the secondary objective, and that meant she didn't know. Which meant the 'ol LT was playing it pretty close to the chest. Fine. He had his priorities, she had hers.

Then, of course, was everybody in between. The new girl, the Toa of Iron, looked like she could be competent. Hard to tell, but the fact that she was a Highlander gave her a certain amount of competence until proven otherwise. The Kalta, Plag's loyal follower, and the Ba-Toa seemed... Like they might know just enough to be dangerous. She had a sinking feeling that none of them had ever met a proper Rahkshi. The ones that had populated the Darkwalk for the past couple of years were dangerous, yes, but they were feral. Bestial. No capacity for planning, making their powers and considerable physical prowess a much more manageable concern. Not, as the Turaga pointed out, that either were to be taken lightly still. But if Makuta was back, and he was, and if the Rahkshi had regained their old powers, then...

"No disrespect, short circuit," The merc continued in a tone that didn't sound like she much cared if disrespect was taken or not. "but did you guys ever fight the Rahkshi? I don't mean the remnants in the Darkwalks. I don't even mean the ones that a few of those Legacy folks bossed around a couple months ago. I mean Rahkshi."

"Plag and I," She elbowed her bestie again. "Were at the Hive. Don't remember seeing any of you guys there. Nui Rama, a squad of six Rahkshi. Heuani. We had the ILF at its height, a detachment of the Sanctum Guard, the Gukko Force providing air support, and all the Ussalry Heavies and change. It was an attack over open ground. We had full visibility and freedom of movement. And a lot of people died."

Herself nearly among them, and one of Plag's friends not so nearly.

"Different scale, sure. But even with how big the Darkwalks are, and they're pretty big, we're still going to be moving in a confined space with limited visibility and zero unit cohesion. I absolutely do not want to get fried because someone hits me with plasma, or zapped because someone got zap-happy. I'll bring up the rear with Plag, short stuff with big armor should definitely take point. But the first person who throws plasma around frivolously, or Nui forbid supercharges that plasma? I'll knock you out myself so you can't cause us any trouble."

The young Toa averted his eyes bitterly at the mention of the Rama Hive. He had still been a Matoran when it happened, but still, it was a sore and ugly reminder that wherever something important was happening, he still somehow always managed to be at the opposite side of the island from where it happened.

Okay no, there was that one time the Xa-Koronans attacked Le-Koro. He had been there to help with that. He felt the tightness in his chest loosen up a little at the thought. It wasn't much, but he had helped. The speaker whose name he didn't know did have a point of course. Kehuri hadn't fought a Rahkshi when it was under Makuta's influence. His first time fighting one had been their attempted all-out assault, when they had first turned feral- and he had almost died as a result. Later altercations had gone better, though. He had been training, and he had fought intelligent foes- even organized ones- in the past. Still, he didn't speak up, there were more experienced minds called for at the moment.

He finished with his shield and leaned it against his spear, then rummaged in his bag for his handful of spare lightstones, holding them out for anyone who didn't have one to take.

The Ba-Toa crossed his arms, and tried to limit his glare at Skrihen. “Zueya is trying to suggest ideas for group cohesion. We’ll respect your veterancy; if you have better plans, lay them out and we’ll follow. But I haven’t heard much from you besides threatening to assault our own teammates for doing their jobs,” Skorm checked the lightstone on his belt, and replaced it, letting his words hang in the air for a moment, “… and telling us how likely we are to die.”

Zueya had been cowed by the veteran Bo-Toa, but Skorm’s defense buoyed her. She took out her own staff and extended it to its full length, trickled a bit of electricity through it, arcing from end to end, then planted one end in the snow. She tossed her own lightstone to Skorm, who caught it and placed it on his own belt.

“This is of course,” Skorm resumed, “That Lieutenant Torin doesn’t already have a plan already.”

"Not threatening, scar boy, just stating. And I'll speak a little clearer, just because your ears seem a bit clogged." The mercenary drew herself up to her full height; much less than Skorm, but just like before if she had any reason to be aware of it she didn't show it. "A plan doesn't substitute for unit cohesion. We have three Sanctum Irregulars, a class of trainees from the Sanctum Guard, two Highlanders, a few freelancers, and two of Tarkahn's Kulti. A handful of us have worked with a few of the others, but none of us have worked as a whole. If it goes down, we're all going to have different trained reactions. And if we try and plan around close coordination, without practice, we're going to be in trouble."

"To that end, the most important commonalities are placement, short stuff in point with Plag's pal playing danger detector. If we encounter anything resembling organized resistance, as the LT already agreed, we get the rooks out and we go from there. Priority number one is getting everybody back out, which includes your cranky hide. So you don't go throwing around powers that are gonna fry the guy next to you. You watch out for the guy next to you. And if we encounter organized resistance, we cover the rookies getting out and then we get out ourselves. And the LT goes to plan B."

    Skri spread her arms expansively.

"Battle plans don't survive contact with the enemy. Keep it simple. Keep people alive. And truly, don't test me."

This from the lady that seems dead-set on picking a fight with her own team.  Charek bit back the retort.  Discussion had actually been going rather smoothly before the Bo-Toa- "Skri", apparently- had started throwing her weight around, and acting like his usual snappy self would hardly bring things back under control.

Still, he did feel the need to say something.  "If what you're worried about is a lack of practical experience, why not actually put the team through some practice?  Finding a pet Rahkshi for us to fight certainly doesn't sound feasible, but at the very least, we could do some sparring or something.  Maybe spend a few minutes in the Dark Walk, too, just so those of usthat haven't been there before know what we're getting into- assuming we shouldn't expect to be jumped the second we step inside."

He glanced at Lieutenant Torin.  "That said, last time I checked, the LT's in charge, not us.  I'd like to hear from him what options we have."

These,” he said, straining with the unexpected effort of opening a few - This is what happens when you fail to keep up with your exercises - “Will have the most relevant information on the Akiri and the Toa Maru. The inter-Koro politics are a tad more… dispersed, but all correspondences are reliably in chronological order - newest at the front - so it will be possible to assemble a timeline.”

Aerus took a moment to catch his breath, and then smirked. “As for Xa-Koro, some of that I can tell you myself: it was destroyed by Ambages, as part of a group called the Four Peers.”

He still remembered his own encounter with Ambages: he had come to Echelon and Makuta’s other followers, offering a way into Pala-Koro. Moments later, the Dark Toa Ronkshou had appeared, and provided them equipment - Aerus’ revolver included - via Ahkmou, and his group of ‘Kufa’s. He had been interested, if not entirely surprised, to learn that Ambages was not just acting in his own interests, and that it was the Cultured Gentry itself that supplied their weapons to Ahkmou. That Ambages was also a member of the Peers, prior to his death in Ko-Koro, had been a surprise to him - as was the existence of the Peers altogether. This was enough motivation to have sought out mentions of the former Vizier in Echelon's journals and correspondences, in order to satiate his curiosity, but without having encountered the Peers he had little interest in them.

“I had a brush with him, but he was representing the Cultured Gentry then. I can’t tell you much about the other Peers, but Echelon had a lot of contact with them.” He indicated another drawer with his cane. “Between that, and the old man’s journals, you should find most of what you need.”

The Toa nodded slowly, staring intensely at the paper-filled drawers.

"Good," he said, sounding almost vacant. "Very good."

Briefly, there was a tension in his face, as of raging emotion barely held in check. Then it was gone, and the Toa looked back to Aerus, his casual smile restored.

"And what are you looking for? I can just show you the cipher, of course, but I might be able to point you in the right direction as well. Save you going through years' worth of notes."

He shrugged, and tapped his cane on the floor. His voice, tempered as it was by his increasing weariness, was still clearly young. Too young by far to be walking more like a Turaga than a Matoran. "Based on his recent notes, it seems like all of the good ##### in that ouevre is locked behind that cipher."

He thought back to the cave collapse in Le-Koro, the temporary loss of sensation in his arm that was the first true hint of things to come. Since then, he’d had many interesting conversations with doctors who could not seem to decide whether or not his bouts of psychosis were related to this, but agreed for the most part that at the very least, his peripheral nervous system was #####ed. The damage could not be reversed, and he just had to stay active, perform his exercises, and hope that that would slow it down. Easier said than done when in near-constant pain, and still not an actual solution.

“My hope is that there could be something in there that was little use to him and his grand goal of overcoming death itself, but would make significantly more of a difference to someone whose body is wasting around them.” A vain hope, most likely, but he needed something to keep him going.

Torin's eyes were entirely impassive, their ice blue coloring revealing nothing of the Lieutenant's thoughts as he watched the bickering proceed, then his lips twitched beneath his mask before he spoke. "We are all idiots, as the Turaga has said," he responded, his voice dry and humorless. "Yet, we have a task to accomplish, and if this team cannot maintain enough cohesion to ensure the safety of the rookies we are to escort and have a chance of retrieving the object we have been sent to recover, I have no issue with disbanding it and seeking a different group." His eyes flicked from the Bo-Toa to the pair of Kalta, then back. "I do not know what grudges you hold or points you have to prove, but rest assured that I have had to set some of my own aside. What my colleague said was true, we will have no element of surprise. The only cards we hold our opponents will not be aware of are these two," he continued, his finger slowly indicating the Turaga and the Vortixx. "--as the rest of us are Toa, and I assure you our opponents are more than experienced at dealing with raw elemental tricks and mask powers. The ones you fought before, Skorm, were effectively lobotomized, made unable to think beyond animal instinct. That will not be the case this time, if we should encounter them."

He indicated Kehuri and Safina. "They will be leading until we reach the hideout. It is a sound suggestion. Unless we are surrounded or facing more than three Rahkshi, I believe our strategy should be not to try to stop them, but use the talents of Earth, Ice, and Iron to collapse the passage and seal off a single Rahkshi from its pack at a time. I hope that will give us enough time for our numbers to overwhelm them quickly and continue to retreat, while also giving the other two less help in getting through the barrier. Packs are far more dangerous now than individuals."

"Once we reach the hideout, Highlander Ronan and I will take the lead. The person in question was a Fe-Toa, I believe her powers will prove key to undoing any traps he may have left us. The rest of you will provide fire support and utility talent along the way."

His eyes flicked to the Kalta, Skri, and other Ko-Koro affiliated individuals. "How attached is your Akiri to his particular passage to the underworld? If we have to collapse it after us, will he be aggrieved?"

  • IC: Dartakh (Ko-Koro, near the Lieutenant)

He stood like a statue and continued to quietly follow the conversation. It was hard to keep track of everything that was said to the point where he started to grow tired of it. Besides, no plan survives contact with the enemy. He was starting to feel like many of the people around him would not be coming back home from the trip to the Dark Walk.

Having stopped listening to the conversation, he made a simple informative statement directed to the Lieutenant: "Because I specialize in close combat, I should be near the front. I have a device that can counter the elemental powers of a rahkshi, but I will use only when necessary. I also have a helmet that shields me from psychic abilities. I've heard some rahkshi have those."
