Putting a mask back on is like a breath of fresh air. Energy rushes through me. The tips of my extremities tingle. I feel like I’m getting lifted off the ground as the weight of my armor disappears. And sweet Mata Nui, do I feel fast.

    She’s back baby, the

    Kanohi Calix

    Great Mask of Fate

You can’t do better than this.

It’s not quite the same as my old mask; a little uncanny, like an off brand copy of a piece of merchandise. But although the texture’s different, I recognize the feeling all too well: capability. Anything I can do, I will. No misses, no slip ups. Visualizing my movement is the same as actualizing it. My confidence can now literally shape my reality. And I’m eager to text it out.

I look up into my own face, worn by my partner-in-crime, and meet his eyes. My mouth is pressed tight together to keep myself from letting out a whoop of excitement.

    “Ready when you are, brother.”

Before them, some incomprehensible mix between a Toa of Air and a Rahkshi grabbed two of the sturdy metal bars of the cage with the aggression of a ravenous lion. On each of its wrists were three scissor blades at least 6 inches in length. It had gunmetal pauldrons, elbow guards, and knee pads. The rest of its armor was a shiny, polished lime green. That, along with a Miru, a lime-green, cracked and chipped helmet in the shape of a Rahkshi’s head, and a very deep scar across the front and right side of his face made the creature recognizable to all.

“Dark Toa VIDAAAAR!” the announcer bellowed, left arm outstretched in the creature’s direction.

The audience roared, and Vidar, in rote fashion, roared back.

IC: Makua – Le-Wahi, Fau Swamp, Ringli-Barnuma circus tent

A Toa of Ice, wearing black chest armor, golden pauldrons, and a polished white Kanohi Calix, soaked in the clamor from the 100-plus strong audience. This may have been their largest crowd yet.  As the crowds cheers and jeers died down, the announcer slinked away from the stage, leaving the Ko-Koro to share the floor with the 3 other attendants, plus their star.

“Hello there!” Makua called out, beaming with self-satisfaction, “For the newcomers here, allow me to introduce us. I am Makua – no, Mah-koo-AH, no ‘T’!" He then motioned to a heavyset Toa of Fire, Makua's right hand man.

"My Toa-friend over there is Tailua," Makua said "We’ve been running this show for months, and we promise you’re gonna have a great time. Especially if you’re a Le-Koronan

Makua turned back to the encased Dark Toa. The two Matoran attendants unceremoniously made their way off stage.

So, how many of you know the Legend of Dark Toa Vidar?” The heavyset Toa of Fire asked the audience. The vast majority raised their hand.

Excellent,” Tailua said, “Then you’ll know how he was defeated right? Yes, you there

“He was defeated by Toa Joske,” a child Matoran sitting on the front row piped up.

CORRECT!” Tailua said, “A brave hero who also helped the Toa Maru defeat the Makuta and bring peace to the island. He was a brave fighter and hero, and he will be remembered always

There was solemn moment of silence, and then cheers erupted from the audience – all in reverence to the fallen hero.

“Now, with all that history out of the way, let’s play some games!” Makua said with excitement. The audience cheered once again.

Makua knew the routines like the back of his hand. He even knew how the audiences would react to each one. The Toa knew who to project his voice in each situation in just the right way, so that he could get the best reaction each and every time.

It was always the same. First, they would explain bird-speak and how they used that to give Vidar commands. Simple examples then followed: Vidar would move limbs, climb the walls of the cage, he would juggle bamboo disks, axes, and Madu fruit, and even speak the words “Mata Nui bless Mata Nui”. His voice was repulsive, and the audience loved it. Makua would then stress to the audience the importance of keeping your arms out of the cage, less they end up like Tailua. His Toa-colleague would brandish his rusty hook for a hand with a savage grin, and the audience would audibly groan (he knew Tailua loved that bit).

Then came the curveball. A display a clumsiness by Tailua would lift the lock from the cage. The door would swing open at the same time a subtle bird-whistle exited Tailua’s lips.

    “Oh no!” exclaimed Makua.

On cue, the former Dark Toa would stumble out of the cage. The front row audience went go crazy, and there were gasps from the stands.

Makua kept his smile in check, and instead looked up at the unfocused eyes of the Dark Toa of Vidar, letting the shocked silence set the mood.

He waited to see what would happen next.

Hakari looked thoughtful after she read what Kanohi wrote on the plate, understanding what this Toa most likely wanted.

"So, I'm guessing you want to find this Lesterin trader yeah? I'd like to ask him or her a few questions myself to be honest." She couldn't let a fellow Lesterin get away with giving someone such a dangerous plant as bird food after all. Plus, she wanted to see what they knew about Seprilli.

Kanohi winced at Hakari’s words, as well as the Toa of Jungle’s gaze. He … he need to go to Ga-Koro, he had a vision guiding him there. But could he face Nichou? After all this time? With so little he accomplished? And he could not leave this unresolved, could he? He needed to help.

And maybe … if he helped this Toa and Hakari prevent more parasites … well, he saw how they almost killed a Matoran. This was important, if he helped solve it, maybe he could face Nichou.

He drummed his armor, uneasy with that selfish thought. He … what mattered was saving lives, not proving himself. But … but he needed to prove himself regardless, and this would still help the island.

And more importantly, Hakari seemed to want to go, and he … he already failed her once.

So he scratched into the tablet. “Hakari, I am sorry, I should have been more helpful against the parasite. I left you alone. I … I am sorry. I do not know how much help I will be against this trader, but I can try to help as long as I can.

He paused, and wrote in the tablet, “Toa of Jungle, you can call me Kanohi, and this Lesterin is Hakari. If it’s alright, what should we call you?

The Toa took in the message. It seemed Kanohi had some unresolved guilt. He even wrote an elipse in his written message. Well, that was not his business. He had their names now, so he could stop referring to them by their descriptions. Kanohi and Hakari. But his name... When was the last time he had used it? Never, he supposed. He knew he had remembered it, at least dimly, when he had first landed on the island, but now it had escaped him entirely. It was not some big existential problem for him, however. He had simply never needed one. The Rahi of the jungle knew him by his scent. Wild sentients knew him by his appearance, and had little need to speak in their own right. It would be handy at least for Hakari to be able to call to him, though, so perhaps, for this quest they were about to begin, he ought to have one.

    He shrugged.

  • OOC: no, don’t call out my excessive use of ellipses, I’m sensitive about that

    IC Kanohi - Le-Wahi - Le-Koro

Kanohi hesitated, did this stranger not even know his own name? Kanohi had been like that once upon a time, the names he used on Mata-Nui he had chosen for himself. Even now his past was beyond him, unease his past was what he witnessed in his more nonsensical visions.

He shook his head, his own past wasn’t important. He wrote into the wood, “then should we call you ‘Friend,’ Toa?” He winced at his own forwardness as he handed back the tablet, he did not know this Toa, only just met him, the word friend was far too aggressive. But well, it was something to call him, without overwriting his identity.

As he waited for the Toa to reply, Kanohi’s attention was divided between him and Hakari. Was the Lesterin angry at him? Had his apology only iratated her? He knew he had messed up, he admittedly had little choice at the time, Ramaka had needed rescuing, but to leave a Lesterin to fight the parasite alone, abandoning her…

His optics darted beneath his mask between the two taller beings, worried that Hakari was angry and that the Toa might be uncomfortable with his bluntness?

  • IC: Kuhrin (North bank of Lake Pala)

    I hate you.

You made me die, you made me kill, you made me hate, you made me suffer, you-

    You made me.

    I love you.

You gave me life, you set me free, you let me kill, you let me hate you let me die you-

The water is still, today. It reflects the sky, the trees, the buildings - but not me. I am nothingness, a ghost. The Huna affords me that small mercy. There wasn't much left of it when I found it - in fact it was a miracle it still worked. Every now and then my image flickers, as if to remind me that no matter how badly I may desire the contrary, I am still alive.

I could die now, if I deserved to be treated fairly. I could take off this mask and let myself fall into the water, sink and join the half-decayed bodies at the bottom of the lake. But would I then be assuming my right to join those who died fighting for the light? I could shatter my skull with a sonic blast and haemorrhage my own brain. My life would be obliterated in one agonising second. But do I then grant myself the right to stop thinking? To forget?

Could I grant myself the right to die?

Once I thought I didn't deserve to live. After Kre- after I killed Krell, it seemed like a miracle that I survived. I thought that The Darkness was still out there, watching over me, its loyal servant. Did I know it was gone? Could I sense it? It wouldn't be my first sip of denial. If anything, that was me finishing the #### chalice. I know now that there was no darkness; it was me - I was alone, clinging to life like a parasite, willing to do anything to prolong my miserable existence. I was supposed to die. But Ferron would spare me, the righteous fool. He withheld my permission.

Ko-Koro... I should have been there. Maybe if I had killed a few of those scum it would have made some small difference. But I knew then and I know now: It wouldn't. Nothing can repay the debt I owe to the people of this island, to Life itself. If I had been there, if I had fought the servants of the Dark Lord as I had once fought with them, I would have been doing it for me. To feel better. And, maybe, to finally die. I could die an unknown martyr. How ironic that would be.

"There are some things that can't be forgiven or forgotten. They can only be left, and... healed from. As much that's still possible for me, at least."

    Noka was right.

At least she had the privilege of being able to leave me behind. I can't leave myself. Perhaps if I could somehow shed my body, shed my face, I could begin to escape my past - but I would still be me.

    ...

The voices of Pala-Koro's inhabitants are audible to my ears, even from this distance. Earlier, looking across the lake as I do now, my longing eyes searched for anyone I recognised, but it was futile, and foolish. If anyone recognised me, which was far more likely, I would be hunted and most likely killed. Far too merciful a fate.

    But also a tantalising one.

Nervously, I deactivate my mask and flicker back into visibility, relaxing a muscle that I always keep tensed. Immediately the whole of my body is soaked through in this familiar sinking feeling, this liberating, disgusting feeling, like being suspended over the edge of a cliff, and I hate, hate it, and even so savour its lustful allure. To be seen was to be real, to be accused and judged by the Light and all who value it. I am not one of them. The Light shuns me, that's why it gave me the Huna - it doesn't want to touch me.

...I don't know if it's just me, or if it's real, but my skin burns in the light now. It burns.

I reactivate the mask, and disappear into safety once again. That little masochistic episode was a foolish and pointless move. To say "I can't help it!" would be a lie - whenever anyone says that, it's a lie. I can always help it. But I don't.

At least I always regret it. If only that counted for something.

Trava saw it in the distance now. She had gotten quite familiar with the silhouette of the village that rested on the lakefront. She had only vaugely pieced together what made it come to be. That cute guy from the Gukko Force she'd smashed during that victory party in Le-Koro didn't have much to spare on its current condition. Well, Alfon wasn't here so his opinion could stuff it.

Pala-Koro was very clear in the distance now, and the Toa of Air she'd put up to the challenge was completely even. Trava pushed herself again. Another swing with her new grapple helped her cross a rare gap in the treebound highway. It really was turning out very handy. Just the last sprint to go

So some of the dials were labeled, that was useful.

A few of them were not, that wasn't.

The wheel was responsive, that was something at least, though it took some doing for him to get it turning. The fact that it seemed to be designed for a being twice his height wasn't helping matters much at all. Still, it turned and appeared to do exactly what he imagined it to. The lever to the right of him, though, that was what had caught his current interest. It was marked, sure, but without any sort of meaningful indicators. Or at least, ones that were not very descriptive. Simply the Matoran numbers :0::1::2::3:, and :4:. All in all, decidedly unhelpful.

There was a second lever, smaller, and only possessing two positions as opposed to the multitude of the first. That one was currently flipped forward, and he didn't really want to try to move that.

He really hated not knowing what something did.

    To Karz with it.

Kalih pushed the larger lever forward and braced himself for... nothing to happen. Well that was anticlimati-

The vessel suddenly lurched forward, the sudden movement nearly taking him off his feet, before an ear-splitting grinding sound emanated from the fore of the ship, and the Kavinika stopped dead nearly as suddenly as it had started moving. The bow undoubtedly ramming itself into the shoreline before him. Distantly, the Ga-matoran heard a splash, but he didn't pay it much mind, instead working the larger lever back from the completely forward position which he had placed it. The grinding stopped, thankfully, as did the ship's motion. Angry chittering sounded from the deck behind him.

    "Okay... Alright."

    Learning here.

Kanohi relaxed, he had been worried about pushing a name onto the reclusive Toa, but if the stranger was okay with it, that changed things a bit. And honestly he was glad his potential social misstep had been overlooked. Still he would leave the naming up to Hakari, she was the one who could speak after all.

The Fe-Matoran vigilante still could not match her gaze though. He knew she was right, he had needed to help Ramaka, he could not have helped Hakari. Rationally, he knew this. But emotionally guilt still rocked him. At the least he should have monitored the fight better, so he could jump in if need be. Yes he had a little, he had lent Hakari his lighter after all, but still…

He shook his head, rattling his many wooden masks. He needed to focus, to prepare for the journey ahead. He would need to get some new supplies, but in the meantime, he began to do some quick checks on his armor and Volo Lutu Launcher. Just to make sure they would be ready for a potentional trek across Le-Wahi.

Kanohi nodded, Lapu then. He bowed apologetically to the Toa, before he chiseled what he assumed would be one last message in the tablet, “I will need to get some supplies, my launcher sometimes is finicky, and if it ever falls from my hand I could easily drown in mud. I hope to improve it a little before we leave.

He knew he was no great inventor, he could not turn his Volo Lutu Launcher into one of the elegant wrist-wounded designs. But he could jury-rig something to lash the tool to his arm, and help make it function a bit better. He was not helpless when it came to crafting. He had his limits, but they were not so low to be useless.

The vigilante paused and carved, “I am guessing you will wish to speak to Ramaka before we go as well? Since she might know more?” Hopefully at least she could tell them what breed this Lesterin trader was, and where she met them.

Kanohi dipped his head, before digging underneath one of his wooden mask. His metal fingers clanged against a pouch of widgets, which he fished out. He closed his optics in thought as his fingers dug in the bag, he had already paid for the room and last night’s fuel so…

He sighed to himself, after he gets his Volo Lutu Launcher upgraded,  money might be tight for the foreseeable future. The problem of being a vigilante and not having a paying job. Still, he was decent at foraging, he had eaten well last night, and saving lives comes first. He should get supplies.

The Fe-Matoran bowed and offered back the breastplate to Lapu, before stowing away his widgets. He headed towards a market, firstly to get his supplies, but also because he recalled that Ramaka was a merchant, so she might be there.

Come to think of it, she might have some information on Nichou. She had been sent to get lumber for refugee camps for him…

Kanohi shook his head almost instantly. He … he wasn’t ready. It had been so long since the Companions were dissolved by Stannis. And Aurax … he clenched his optics as if to squeeze forth tears. He … destiny might be leading him back to Nichou and this Nale, but he … he did not know if he could face them.

The newly christened Lapu followed Kanohi out of the inn, disregarding the looks cast his way. He molded the wooden tablet back into the shape of his armor, and took in the sights of morning-time Le-Koro. Far too much metal, but there were enough trees for him to feel comfortable enough. She shuddered to think they were going to keep "innovating" past this point. The island and the forest had given them all they needed, so why look further? Dim half-memories of having seen this before irked him. Sentient beings were programmed to want more and more technology, convenience, speed. And like fools, they followed that programming without question, rather than meditate on the life they already had, and which was already sufficient. He huffed to himself, not noticing Kanohi's internal conflict.

Kanohi wore many wooden masks, one large one even hung on top of his true mask. He did this for a few reasons. One, the masks gave him protection from collisions with trees or hostile Rahi. Second, it made him feel stronger, more heroic. And finally, it hopefully helped Dece hide.

And right now it hid his shaking optics.

He hadn’t even been there for Aurax when he was killed, he … and if a Matoran like Aurax could be killed so easily, despite being chosen by destiny, could Kanohi even hope to compare when he had been less worthy? He shuddered, and began drumming his masks anxiously.

For now though he had work to do. He moved among the stalls, he was no good at haggling, another reason money would be tight. Still, he knew how to tinker, and he approached a seller of surplus medical supplies. He clicking his bracelet, “I w-will require an arm brace and seven splints.

Wait, I know you…” The Bo-Matoran muttered and Kanohi’s heartlight sputtered, before the Matoran of Jungle continued, “you are that Kolhii-head that brought in that sick Ta-Matoran four days ago. You found someone else messed up?

No … getting better prepared for possible trouble.

Humph. Odds are you will need that for yourself, trying to outrun a Muaka,” Kanohi winced, that wasn’t how it had happened. Not really.

The Bo-Toa fidgeted nervously in his own right. He really had never been in a city before, let alone for so long. In fact, the closest thing to a crowd he had even been in was when he had defended Kini-Nui from infected Rahi with a group of Toa. Now he felt naked and exposed. His eyes cast about, wondering if someone was following them. The danger in the jungle was you didn't know what lay behind a tree, but in town the danger was you never knew what was happening behind the eyes that were trained on you. Rahi were predictable- either they wanted food, water, shelter, or help. Sentients were not. Lapu didn't like not being able to even hazard a guess what so many people wanted.

Why had Kanohi come to this Bo-Matoran? Was he the trader? No, it seemed he had business with him. He fidgeted some more, scratching at his wooden armor. It was too plain, too rigid. He was used to vines and roots coating him- easily manipulatable. He couldn't wait to leave the town so he could really immerse himself in nature again. Kanohi was the one who knew the most about their goal though, so he would follow.

"Then let's kick it off." I gruffly agreed, meeting his wolfish, swashbuckling smirk with a nod and slight grin of my own— for all this guy appeared to be, you and I both need to agree that his enthusiasm was its own subtle breed of infectious.

And how could it not be? I had to admit, after the momentary adjustment period, my head was in the same place his had to have been.

All of a sudden, all it takes me to get somewhere is look. I've spent decades hiking my way around this island, getting turned around by barriers, natural or otherwise, where I could see so tantalizingly close all the possibilities that lied just beyond.

And now, all I had to do was think about it, and I'm there. I'd have found Ta-Wahi that fateful day in record time, and have by sheer process of elimination hunted that senseless jacketed kid down in record time, elusiveness of Kini-Nui notwithstanding. See Daring try and stick my forehead with a compass now...

I was getting off track, and ahead of myself. If we intended to pull this off, I needed to be in the right frame of mind for it— no matter how simple a plan like this is on paper, it took execution.

We were out of sight for the moment, concealed by some shrubbery. I had a clear enough line to the top of the Lighthouse, its glass dome glittering in the midday sun, waiting to be examined up close by an untrained eye. I checked above us. No overhang of the foliage. Canopies were far and away where forest fires of all stripes tended to hang out, and given that this plan involves taking a mass of elemental goop well beyond most leaves' smoke points, that was something I needed to pay attention to.

    "Here goes."

In my hand, a concentration of light and heat began to form, swirling out from my palm into a steadily growing orb of dull red. Once I was satisfied with the size— this would end up a streak more than maintain it's shape to begin with— I began to ratchet up temperature, the heat leaking out from around me.

    Cook it more... more...

It passed from red, to orange, towards a bright yellow-white—

And as if I was chucking an Akilini disk, I leaned back and whipped my hand skyward, a burning line streaking through the air.

The cross-wired Fe-Matoran was not the best at reading the expressions of others, but even he was able to notice Lapu was uncomfortable. No wonder, even Le-Koro was a rush of hustling and bustling Matoran and other breeds moving about. And the unease of a Toa mattered more than his.

Pausing his shopping, Kanohi pulled out a cloth of woven plant fibers, and pretending to wrap it around his own face. He tried to mimic steady breathing and slow his heartlught’s pounding, in an attempt to suggest that muffling the sounds and sights of Le-Koro might make them less overwhelming. He then offered the plant rag to Lapu, if it would help.

At the same time Kanohi had gotten the medical supplies, lubricant, cord, and a few gears and springs for repairing his Volo Lutu Launcher. He was effectively broke now, but at least he could helpfully get his Volo Lutu Launcher working. As he stowed away the last of his goods, he spotted Ramaka, sitting glumly outside at he storefront for a lumberyard.

    Isn’t that…?

Kae adjusted for the minor miscalculation as she realised their true destination. Props to the Lesterin who had put her up to this - she’d managed to stay even with Kae, despite her Calix. Unfortunately for Trava, Kae had been holding back one pretty significant ability.

The timing had to be precise, but she knew what she was doing - she waited for the exact peak of momentum in the arc of her current swing. And then, she didn’t throw the next hook.

Instead, Kae flew forwards, combining her control over the wind with her own inertia to breeze ahead (literally) of her opponent, tossing her a mock salute in mid-air before throwing her next hook - much further ahead than she could have without the boost - to repeat the process.

  • IC: Gorro - Le-Koro

The young Cy-Toa stumbled out of the doorway of the Cackling Kewa Restaurant, just barely catching himself and remaining on his feet. Losing your balance could prove fatal in Le-Koro, especially in the lesser-regarded outskirts, with all its poorly-maintained guardrails and opportunistic, hungry-eyed miscreants. Such a small, out-of-the-way platform was where the restaurant was located, and in its doorway stood the owner.

“I dun wanna spy-see you ever again near me restaurant, you slow-thinkin’ ######! Now make like a leaf-runner! Get!”

Gorro had never seen a treespeaking Skakdi before, but anything goes in Le-Koro, as was often said. The door slammed behind him as the establishment’s proprietor finished throwing him out. The Toa of Crystal didn’t blame him for being angry, it was just another job he’d messed up. He tried not to blame himself, but there really was no excuse for dropping that many dishes on the ground when trying to wash and store them. Even if it was all accidental, what would he tell the guy? That he was being distracted by nightmares? No, better to just leave and move on.

    Mơve o̴n͜...̷

Maybe that was the problem - Le-Koro was a place for a lot of people. A haven, even, if you needed to disappear. Lot of people from Xa-Koro frequented this town too, and when the latter had gone beneath the waves…

    B̴̧̛e̕ń̴ȩ̷a̢͡͠t͢͠͡h ̵th҉͘͠e͡ w͢a͘v̢é̴̛s͞͠.͠.͏́.

Sometimes, you just gotta pick yourself up and leave it all behind. A lot of his friends had done that. Those that remained didn’t really have much time for his company anymore - either busying themselves with legitimate work or fallen in with less savory types. Gorro wanted none of that life. He knew that with his luck, he wouldn’t last a week before he’d have more holes in him than an Onu-Koronan mineshaft.

    Ǫ̵͜n̨ų̧̛͜͠-͘͢͜Ḱo̡̨͝r͘͜͡o̵̸.͢͞҉̧.̵̡͏.̢́

He braced his hands against the guardrail lining the edge of a platform before retracting them quickly after a creak reminded him of what quarter of the city he was in. Retrieving his flask from beneath the folds of his ragged cloak, he took a quick swig of tea, noting the odd, slightly salty taste of the contents. How long was it since he’d refilled the thing? Couldn’t have been before yesterday. He dumped the rest out over the edge of the platform, watching it trickle out and join the rest of the marshy terrain below.

An hour later, he’d rode the elevator down to that same jungle floor, trudging carefully upon the path that travelers had worn through the thicket, where rahi rarely tread. It was only a short walk to the rocky outcropping, totally obscured from the air, where vegetation and trees camouflaged it against the rest of the greenery. In its side was a wide, black aperture, the yellow din of lightstones revealing that it stretched onwards and downwards for mio and mio. A sign, propped up between a few craggy stones flanking the cave entrance, read: ‘Onu-Ta-Le-Koro Subtransect.’ Beneath the faded lettering sat a guard from the Gukko Force, her spear retracted and her arms crisscrossing her chest. She wore a bored expression like she was born with it. Her partner, flanking the other side of the cave, waved the Toa of Crystal past without a word.

Entering the cave felt like passing into another plane of reality. The sing-song chirping of birds, buzzing of insects and the constant flutter of greenery blowing in the wind faded behind him, the reverberations of their sound growing more distant as the light grew dimmer and dimmer, as the silence and darkness of the cave swallowed it all - and him. The only other sign of life inside was an Onu-Matoran perched atop his ussal mount, lightly snoring, though he started awake at Gorro’s footfalls, amplified by the weird acoustics of the rocky tunnel around them. He approached the cart trailing behind the beast of burden.

“Mm, ‘s two widgets for a ride, friend.”

His hands darting beneath his clothing once again, the Cy-Toa pulled two out of the three copper-centered coins he had and dropped them in the outstretched purple palm, which retracted and deposited its treasure in a similar pouch. Gorro couldn’t help but hear the c-clin-clink of a fair few more widgets than he had right about now - a comparable dragon’s hoard.

    “Where ya goin’?”

    “Onu-Koro, I guess.

“Hm. Climb in back, and we’ll be off…” he muttered, the same purple hand gesturing lazily to the rickety wooden cart behind him. Complying with his request, Gorro sat and noted that the seats were definitely not made for someone of his stature - the cart was a relic from a time before his, when far fewer Toa roamed the island of Mata Nui. Maybe if he was here then, and he alone, he’d be a hero to people, rather than a jester in rags. His hand idly slid into the coinpurse affixed to his belt, running his thumb over the last remaining widget there. Courage and Valor, were stamped the words upon metal - words he’d seen glinting in the sun time and time again, and felt far too little beneath his fingers. He withdrew his hand, a small, irregular crystal formed within his palm while out of sight, unconsciously but not uncommonly at the same time. His other hand felt for a chisel, and finding it, he got to work as the cart lurched forward and the skittering sound of crab legs upon stone droned out his carving.

After many twists, turns and another hour of his day passing, they remained still in the tunnel, not a word exchanged between him and the crab driver. There needn’t be any, though. Gorro preferred the silence. Talking to people is a demanding, exhausting task, don’t you know? And still he carved, carved, carved…

tik tik tik scrape... tik tik tik…

Bit by bit the crystal took a new form, pieces hewn away by his tool and the structure subtly formed by his powers. He scarcely even needed to look down at it - his fingers probing over edges and corners, seeing the shape as it needed to be more completely than his eyes could. A while later, the chisel was holstered, and said eyes beheld a small, crystalline star as it was raised before them, held between thumb and forefinger. It shone with an ethereal energy intermittently, the lightstones lining the walls refracting through it and making it twinkle like it was the real thing. Gorro held it at arm's length, squinting his eyes and forcing the background of dark stone and pale yellow light to blur as it became a cloudless night sky encompassing his star.

There he had it - his very own spirit star. He opened his eyes fully again and admired his creation, and then tossed it into the darkness trailing behind the cart. A stupid fantasy, but one that passed the time as they traversed beneath Ko-Wahi, headed north…

    N̤͔̠̱̩̗̟͔͔͒̐ͨȎ̯̘͉̆̎̒̚Ř͚̱̙̗̻̮̉͋̾T͚͉͉͙̹̭̪̓ͫ̈͒̚H̙̗͖͌ͩͬ̽̽̊ͮ̑̋.͕̦͓̞͕̔̿ͬ̉.̪̩̲͖ͭͦ̑ͣ͂̔̆ͪ̚.͖̺̘̖̪̩̦̄̅ͤ̿ͭͬ͑͋

Bracing his elbows on his knees, Gorro leaned forward and held his own head in his hands, eyes covered and his vision obscured by a darkness deeper than the one he already found him in. It didn’t take long for sleep to arrive.

    He was drowning again.

Breaking the surface, he only found the air harder to breathe than the water. It was thick, like syrup, and breathing it in burned his lungs until they filled fully, and the waves reclaimed him and he tried to scream her song was

incredibly beautiful, a seductive melody spinning out through the v̱͚̱̩͕͚̘̎̂̉̆ͪͮ̽o͈̊͌̔ì̲̠̩͉͖͉͕̎̅̅̉̇d̪̝̭̥ͯ̓̊͂̂̚̚ where no

    emptiness!

    And beauty. Have I mentioned-

The mist envelops him. He looks down and sees a crab scuttling at his feet. The crab looks delicious but he is scared and tells him that he is diseased and not good for eating. Perhaps he doesn’t care and is willing to risk it anyway. The crab exits its shell, which is not a shell but the mouth and head of a dead sea-bird. He grabs my hand, interlocking his fingers with my own, our connection sealed in blood now. We proceed down the path and look out at the world beyond. The world beyond the beach. Not outward but down. And to look down you must look up as it towers above you. A perfect, weathered

Let me tell you, plasma is something else. Like fire, but prettier, and better than fire, because only time you’re likely to meet it is on special occasions when you run into someone who can conjure it from thin air. It’s been a while since I’ve last seen it, and I find myself mesmerized for a moment as I stare at the swirling patterns of glowing energy in his hand.

My attention is suddenly pulled into the sky as he shoots the magic gas into the air above the battlements of the Ga-Koro stronghold.

    Right. Time for the plan.

“See you in a moment brother. Have fun.” I tell Cipher, patting his shoulder before I leap from the bushes we are using for cover, flailing my arms spectacularly. I land on a protruding rock, lose my balance, and activate the Calix. I instinctually know just how to move to recover, spinning around and posing like a dancer on my toes. With my arms outstretched and a smile so wide it feels like it might crack my borrowed Kanohi, I take a deep breath and announce my presence to the guards on the wall.

“Good Morning Marines! It’s a fine day to break down some walls, is it not!?”

Still he could offer compassion at least. He resumed reaching, offering an embrace. She tackled him, knocking him on his back. “S-sorry, just having a bad day,” she climbed off him, “The medical bill wasn’t great either. But it was better than becoming a walking corpse puppeted by a rose bush.

"We were wondering if you could tell us more about that Lesterin that sold you that dubious seed. The silent Bo-Toa remained as he always did- silent. This was certainly the individual he had been looking for. The mark of the corrupt plant was all over her. She seemed upset about something. He wasn't sure what being "fired" meant, but just like anything to do with fire, it seemed it was bad. Thankfully, Hakari was asking the questions he wanted answers to. He approached the group and stooped down to the Matoran's level. Not quite sure what to do, but figuring it could only make things better, he poured a little of his power into the wooden plating on his armor, pushing a fresh green sprig from its rough surface, which promptly sprouted a leaf, then another, then a bud that swiftly bloomed. He offered the small tree flower for her to pluck off his armor.

Ramaka’s optics widened beneath her powerless Rode, and she looked away. “I … I want to help you. And I will try. But um, I may wear the Mask of Truth, but we’ll, it’s not like I can use it. I can be a bit too trusting. A bit um, naive. Foolish.

Kanohi sat down beside her and offered her his hand, but she did not take it. “I … I do not know his name. But he was a man. I did not see his mask, or if he even had a mask, but I could see his hood stick out with the shape of a Lesterin’s crest. I did not get a good look, he wore a long cloak, most of his body was hidden. Oh, like he was trying not to be identified I guess.

She sighed, “Kolhii-headed Brakas. I just … I should have known. Just a fool

Kanohi’s optics were clenched in thought. He … trust was … he couldn’t even face Nichou, let alone Stannis. Not yet. He had to, needed to prove he was important, that he mattered. That he was not useless. That they could have Faith in him. And this Le-Matoran had so much Faith, and this Lesterin abused it.

Finally he clicked his bracelet, replying, “Do not be mean to you, that Lesterin has been mean enough already. Remember, Faith is a Principle, in fact it the Principle of Le-Koro. Although…” He glanced towards a circling Gukko overhead, “I … I think the Koro had forgotten it. Believing in people is … it’s a good thing. It’s not your fault he exploited it.

Th-thanks,” Ramaka looked away, her heartlight unsteady, “I … I did try to chat with him, asked if he was of the Air element like me. He … I saw green armor underneath his cloak, so I figured he was either of Air, Plant Life, or maybe Crystal.

Kanohi nodded and looked to Hakari beneath his masks, he … he did not know the Lesterin elemental attributes well, hopefully she could explain the abilities of those three types of Lesterins.

In the meantime Ramaka continued, “I … there is something else. I think … well after he gave me the Gukko food I kept talking, and talking, I think I irritated him a little. I mentioned the refugee situation in Ga-Koro and he interrupted me saying that ‘I know, I need to go there’ and then left in a huff. He um, he might be still in Ga-Koro then?

Kanohi paused, thinking it over. He did not really have more to say, and Ramaka had always seemed like she could understand Matoran telegraph language. Was taking the tablet from Lapu really necessary? He shouldn’t impose on the stressed Toa…

Still, what if something did come up? Would he be imposing on Ramaka to require her to translate? Her Principle of Faith already had been taken advantage of, he should not add to that. And if he did not fill the others in, would he risk alienating them? Making them distrust him?

Finally he took the tablet and scratched into the wood, “thank you. I do not think I will need to write something right now, but I will use it if I have a suggestion. I am sorry to impose on you again, I will be sure to return it shortly.

He held up a hand and shook his head. He took a few steps away and touched the trunk of one of the massive and beautiful trees that suspended the town and poured his power into it once more. The tree's surface glowed pale green beneath his hand, then reached back toward him. Back peeled away, revealing a fresh new breastplate for him to wear. and plucked it from the tree's surface, which returned to nearly the same state it had been in before. Re-placing it on himself was a simple matter, and soon enough he was once more armored in his preferred fashion.

Ga-Koro. Of the regions of the island, Ga-Wahi was the one he felt most at home outside the jungle. It was rich in diverse aquatic plantlife, and the Koro itself was- or at least used to be- populated by quite nature-conscious individuals. This was acceptable. And indeed, far preferable to Ta, Po, Ko, or Onu-Wahi. He nodded, ready to go whenever.

Kanohi felt his face burn underneath his mask, shuffling awkwardly. This was a kind gift, hopefully he would make good use of it. And indeed almost instantly he had a thought to add. His sense of geography was not the greatest, but even he saw the problem.

With his chisel he wrote. “I know you two might already realize this, but I will say the obvious just in case. To cross into Ga-Wahi, we will need to pass from Fau Swamp over to the thin strip of land that is Ta-Wahi. Would you be okay with this, Lapu? The burnt trees, and your wooden armor, I do not know if it would be stressful, let alone dangerous.

The Fe-Matoran vigilante was not particularly worried about his own wooden armor, he had treated it ages ago with chemicals he bought from a Bo-Matoran he had saved. They were resistant to flames, they would not burn. He was maybe not as safe as Hakari, but he would likely be safer than Lapu.

OOC: @ARROW404 @Snelly seriously whose idea was it that Ta-Wahi would split up Ga-Wahi and Le-Wahi, those environments bare more resemblance to each other than any other region.

    IC Kanohi - Le-Wahi - Le-Koro

I know you two might already realize this, but I will say the obvious just in case. To cross into Ga-Wahi, we will need to pass from Fau Swamp over to the thin strip of land that is Ta-Wahi. Would you be okay with this, Lapu? The burnt trees, and your wooden armor, I do not know if it would be stressful, let alone dangerous.

    IC: Lapu

The Toa of Plants inclined his head, touched, but also unsure how to feel, about Kanohi's concern. He gave a curt nod of affirmation. Ta-Wahi, region of fire though it may be, was not so riddled with flames that he couldn't pass through unburned. Besides, he recognized the volcano's importance to the flora of Le-Wahi. He did not hate the idea of passing through briefly.
