'Hey, could you activate? Boost my speed?'

    DISAPPROVAL!

'Sheesh! You didn't have to be so firm!'

Sulkua looked out of the window. He watched as a group of Matoran paraded for people to join the Akiri.

    He sighed.

So many people haven't learnt their lesson in aggression, he thought.

The Toa of Ice was only a few paces from the rock the beings were now crouching behind; but so was the avalanche.

I should have waited before coming this close. Just a minute more would have worked, but I should have waited.

Making a quick assessment of the situation, Arktizai saw only one option. Deactivating his Volitak, he leapt towards the group hidden behind the rock—

    IC: Zekev

"Whoa" Zekev exclaimed when a Ko-Toa came into view right by them.

"You've got some nerve to think you can take as all yourself, Toa" Zekev snarled as his eyes flared up.

Zekev was certain that at the moment the Ko-Toa wasn't actually going to pick a fight, in the middle of the avalanche that would just be suicidal. Zekev smiled and pressed his back towards the rock a little harder, as if to emphasize that he had cover and the Ko-Toa didn't.

  • IC (Cael)

    Breathe in.

    Breathe out.

Cael opened her eyes, and was greeted by the sunrise.

The yellow sun spilled over the horizon, lighting up the pristine slopes of the mountain in fiery reds and oranges and rosy pinks. The sky was a clear, cold blue.

The Toa of Water sat cross-legged on the soft ground, her every slow breath turning the crisp air into steam, her heartlight slow. Meditation, she had learned long ago, was the practice of focusing on the stillness in the midst of chaos. The Massif was far from chaotic, which made it easier to focus, but even here there was disorder. The healer looked deep inside herself to find the stillness, and let it fill her with every breath, until everything was quiet.

When she and Joske had first come to the Massif, that stillness had been much more difficult to find. Both Toa were exhausted, both physically and mentally, having been through more trials in the past month than in all the years previous. Joske's fatigue was largely due to the price he had paid to reclaim Cael from death: he had lost his elemental energies, as well as a portion of his Toa Power. His transformation from Toa of Fire to Toa of Light to Toa of nothing had pushed his body to the limit, and for the first few days, he had mostly slept.

Cael had watched over him as he slumbered; unlike the Ta-Toa, her physical frame was not weary. The healer's resurrection had restored her to perfect health; aside from the scar on her face, she had never been in better shape.

Her breath misted in the fresh air; the Toa of Water reached a slow hand up and gently traced the ragged mark that had remained with her even through death and back, the permanent reminder of the price she had paid for love. Heuani had done it; the memory was hazy, as though seen through drunken eyes, but she remembered the keen pain that had accompanied the Toa of Shadow tearing her skin.

That was why she had not slept in those first days. While Joske's wounds could be mended with rest, hers were of a different kind. Every time she closed her eyes, she had seen Heuani, his golden irises the last thing she had seen before falling, falling into darkness. Every time she drew a sheet over herself to sleep, the touch of the fabric had reminded her of how his gentle fingers had caressed her skin only moments before he took her life.

No, she had not slept those first days. Her time with Joske was spent talking and laughing, but every night she had lain awake, sometimes remembering, and sometimes trying not to remember.

    Breathe in.

    Breathe out.

The stillness she sought had taken some time to come. Every morning, as she had always done in Ga-Koro, she rose early to meditate (a habit Joske soon emulated), though the sunrise had only brought frustration for those first weeks. The insides of her eyelids had alternated between the darkness of Heuani's lair and the stark white of the afterlife that had followed; her mind was busy and would not silence.

But time had quietly brought healing, and gradually she had learned to be at peace again. Even as Joske slowly determined his identity again, and learned to accept life without his powers, so Cael had found the stillness of the water that she had almost forgotten. Night by night, she learned to sleep again, and let go of her fears.

Of course, their healing hadn't returned them to their former selves. As Joske was fond of saying, each of them had their scars, some more visible than others. Nobody could go through what they had and emerge unchanged. They were different now, and no amount of meditation could change that.

Even now, three months later, she still had nightmares. Some mornings, she would awake with a vague unease lingering in the back of her mind; other times she would jolt awake in the middle of the night, her heart pounding and her scar throbbing. It was only upon finding herself safe in Joske's arms that she remembered where she was, and could find sleep again.

Had it been up to her to cope with the memories and the dreams alone, she didn't know if she would have been able to handle it. But Joske had been there for her, comforting her, helping her to forget the darker memories. She had been there for him as well as he struggled to come to terms with his new identity and grapple with the loss of his powers. It had been a difficult journey, but, together, they had managed to heal.

    Breathe in.

    Breathe out.

Toa Antrim had been more than kind to them: he had graciously extended his hospitality for as long as they had need of it. The Massif was a quiet, secluded place, home to monks and peaceable folk. Here, Joske and Cael were shielded from the public eye, and provided with the serenity they had needed to recover. Though the Toa of Water still missed Ga-Koro, she had grown to love it here.

The sun had cleared the horizon by now; its warm rays lit up the mountainside and set the low-lying mist alight. Cael smiled, and stood to her feet, brushing grass off the backs of her legs before turning and walking back towards the tiny village that she and Joske had come to call home.

    * * *

Joske had just drained the last few drops of water from his cup when the jug on the table suddenly erupted, dousing the Toa in cool protodermis. He sputtered, and wiped his eyes to see Cael standing at the door, laughing.

“What was that for?” he demanded.

“For calling me a dry, boring Toa of Water?” she replied, chuckling.

Joske paused, wracking his memory for when he had committed this terrible deed.

    “That was three months ago!”

“I have a long memory, love.”

As the figure appeared, they were stunned after finding it a dead Matoran. "It is a Matoran." said Letrakh "But what bad-evil could have done this, brother?"

"I am not sure. All I know is that he could not be that far."

"It is best if we go back to Ko-Koro. Your people might be in need of help." said Letrakh

As the duo traveled to Ko-Koro, they have encountered many obstacles: Heavy snow, deadly Rahi, cliffs, canyons and many more. But finally they have managed to reach Ko-Koro; but it was not long before discovering some of the Matoran went missing.

The leader of the village became weary of the villagers disappearing.

"Brother, this is getting ridiculous!" said Letrakh "Matoran disappearing from here and there."

"Indeed it is. I must solve this case alone. Letrakh, you should be weary of your own village. Maybe they are in trouble also."

    Sixhand. Sixhand. That sounds familiar.

Arktizai shuffled through his memories, trying to remember where he had heard that term.

In—in the village. Yes, I remember now.

He had overheard someone bring Sixhand up when walking around Ko-Koro some time ago—he didn't go perusing the village often. And what were they again?

    Were they—were they slavers?

Suddenly, it all fit together. That Matoran must have been their prisoner. And any Matoran in that amount of danger, Ko-Matoran or not, deserved help.

Last he saw them, they were headed towards Ko-Koro; Arktizai began to follow their footprints in that direction.

They aren't going to get away that easily.

    [The Massif - morning]

I stood there, hunched over, dripping wet. My fist clenched in instinct as I raised my-

Oh, wait. That's right. Inwardly I sighed.

    Old habits die hard.

    ...

At least now I won't need a shower.

And it was at this point I burst out laughing, the futility of the situation hitting my funny bone. The sound of my wet feet sliding across the stone echoed across the chamber as I strode up to a smugly-smiling Cael, arms outstretched. "You're right darling, you can remember farther than I can run... "

Here I paused taking her hand and lifting it above her head, gently pushing her hip with the other one as she spun lazily before me, her lithe, graceful body moving like element she represented. Together we danced slowly for a few moments, enjoying each others close proximity in the cool morning air before I took her and bent her backwards, swooping her down, nothing but my damp arms holding her horizontal body mid-air.

"... and considering how far and fast I can go these days, that's saying something." I finished, pulling her closer and laying a passionate one on her lips. It was these kind of tender moments that we had re-discovered over our time here, and in fact crucial to our overall mental recovery. It was amazing how dependent on each other we had become. "Morning beautiful," I finished.

"Mmmm." was all I got out of her as she absorbed the moment. She pulled her head back slightly, and as I held her there she studied my face intently. She raised an amused eyebrow. "Your eyes are exceptionally clear today."

    That's right. My eyes.

I pulled her back to a standing position, the gears in my hind churning. When I became a Toa of Light for that brief time I underwent a lot of physical changes, but the one thing the lucky few who saw me during that time can remember was my eyes. My blue eyes had taken on a brilliant glow (along with my body), but the intensity and the clarity of the blue had been rather unusual. In fact, I can remember when I pulled Stannis aside to speak with him privately he practically had to glance away due to their brilliance. I may no longer be a walking, glowing lightstone anymore, but the uncharacteristic brightness in my eyes did not dissipate; if fact, it was light someone had stuck a lightstone in the back of my skull and cranked up the juice, and as Cael had discovered a type of barometer to my inner thoughts. The intensity, clearness, and brightness was apparently directly tied to my disposition - the better I felt, the brighter and clearer they were. If I was troubled or depressed, they would literally darken and become cloudy. I of course had to take her word on this; the Massif had a rather lack of mirrors, and even so I had no way to observe myself from the outside all the time like she did. It was... a mark of my transformation. A leftover of the event. Not that I minded. On the other hand it DID give her endless amusement, if only for the fact that it was now almost impossible to lie to her.

I literally wore my feelings on my face. And she could read them like a book.

So much for trying to worm my way out of situations... I thought dryly, chuckling lightly at it. I stepped away and back to the table, tossing her a piece of fruit.

"So, given it any further thought?"

"Given what further thought?" she remarked as she took a juicy bite.

"Going to Po-Koro. Well, more specifically, the Temple of Creation. We both know there isn't any crystal there, but I feel the need to visit it anyway. We spent two weeks running around the island and as things went it was the only place we didn't go... thanks to Heuani." I paused, speaking the name quietly as my face darkened. It wasn't as though it had any power over us anymore, but I still preferred not to think about him as much as I could... which was easier said than done considering all that the Shadow Toa did. Just as quick however I felt myself brighten again as I looked at her. "It's something I've been meaning to do, actually finish that quest. I guess you could say finally put the past behind me; something that I feel is personally important. Not to mention I would no mind touring my old stomping grounds, the Kohlii field... I still hear the Bazaar is the place to go for unique and... special items."

I smiled coyly at last statement.

"Me personally? Or the other guy. The other guy was pretty close to him, after fighting alongside him against the Rahkshi. Technically, I've never met him though."

"Maybe that's not a good idea then, he could spoil our plan, I still think we should go to that snowy village above us."

"Don't forget, we meet up in Ga-Koro in two days."

He walked off towards Ko-Koro. Untill he came to a huge wall of ice, which was crearted by the avalanche.

"I suppose we have to scale this?"
